A Wonderful Work Commemorating a Talented Photographer, May 17, 2005
This review is from: American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh (Hardcover)
The late Art Sinsabaugh was among the most overlooked photographers of the late 20th century, in my opinion. In brief, the images presented are both technically unique and historically interesting. Sinsabaugh's main distinction was to use a large-format view camera to turn the flatness of Chicago and Illinois (as well as a few other eastern locales) into works of art by accentuating the landscapes' continuity, linearity, and detail. (I have seen his camera and can say that just carting this thing around must have been exhausting. It's definitely not a point-and-shoot.) To accomplish this he would use the widest angle lens he could get and then concentrate on capturing the extreme details found in largely horizontal strips of scenes, such as farmland or unending rows of Chicago apartment buildings. Some might see this as panoramic landscape work. But, having seen the prints of some of his images and having pored over this book many times, I can say that these images are more than that. At first you may not see some as interesting. But then you find yourself looking closer. You see a white ball on the roof of a building across the street from Chicago's Wrigley Field. Perhaps a long-forgotten home run? Then you see someone's laundry hanging to dry on a porch. You strain to read a sign hanging near a farm house. Before you know it you've spent 2 hours with the book and your eyes are sore.
Like many artists Sinsabaugh suffered periods of great angst over his work, apparently undergoing periods of abandoning his work altogether. He also spent many years teaching photography at the University of Illinois.
This book was published in conjunction with a January, 2005 exhibit of his work at the Art Institute of Chicago. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in seeing how one man found interesting and innovative ways of capturing otherwise uninteresting urban and rural scenes.

A wonderful book, February 17, 2008
This review is from: American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh (Hardcover)
I aggree with the previous review complely. Last week I saw Sinsabaugh's work in Kansas City. As a midwesterner I was delighted to see someone who so totally understood this region.
The techinical quality of the work is stunning and the originality of his vision, principally the panoramics, are eye openers.
At $33 the hardcover is a deal.
If you like David Plowden or Wright Morris this book is a must have.
