Book Description

October 15, 1980
This book is a definitive resource for both scholars studying the field of music, or simply for "hymn-enthusiasts!" The book is divided into main divisions by century and divides the song content by denomination. From the time the pilgrims stepped foot onto our soil through the latter portion of our 20th century, a quality cross-section of the repertoire is presented with research notes and historical background. There are musical examples throughout the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent guide for scholars or enthusiasts!, February 5, 1999

This review is from: American Hymns Old and New (Hardcover)
Well-worth its price, American Hymns is a definitive resource for both scholars studying the field of music, or simply for "hymn-enthusiasts!" Aside from the main divisions by century, the book also divides the song content by denomination. As a researcher in Early American psalmody, I have used its material heavily in my own studies. From the time the pilgrims stepped foot onto our soil through the latter portion of our 20th century, a quality cross-section of the repertoire is presented with research notes and historical background. Highest recommendation!
