5.0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase
Green Day is back to their old roots (not to say I didn't love Warning) with their new single American Idiot. It's a pure punk rock anthem with great drums a strong message and an addictive chorus. Kerrang said Green Day have rarely sounded this good; I'd say they've never sounded so good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre single, but from a great album.
Even if you don't like this single, I encourage you to get the American Idiot album; this single is unrepresentative of the album itself, which is undoubtedly one of the year's best albums to me.

The single, although fun, is too cookie-cutter for me. The same distorted riffs get played over and over, but I appreciate the lyrics and the message of the song;...

Too Much Too Soon is a good rock 'n roll song with Green Day's punk rock vibe pumped into it. The lyrics are not political and go back to old Green Day ("Now it sucks to be you"..."I hope you rest in peices") Very cool song.
I've also heard the song Letterbomb from American Idiot (the album) and I can't wait to hear what Kerrang calls "Green Day's Masterpiece."

4.0 out of 5 stars First single sounds promising, August 31, 2004

"American Idiot," the first single off Green Day's upcoming new album, is a hint that they've gone back to their roots. This song could have easily been on their Insomniac album. It's pure punk-rock. And that's cool, because it's what Green Day does best. There's also some great drumming from Tre Cool. A really good song. Don't expect to hear anything too new, just good ol' Green Day.

This single has a b-side called "Too Much Too Soon" which is also a rocker, but has more of a fun feel to it. Very catchy. I would even say it's better than "American Idiot." CD also has an enhanced section with a link to a special website although I can't figure out exactly what's being offered there.

A recommended purchase, and for dirt cheap. Can't beat that with a stick. Good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Preview, August 31, 2004
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
I have been a Green Day fan for a while, and I've listened to all their music. If this single is any indication of the full-length album, American Idiot will be better than anything that they've done before, including Dookie. The title track is another masterpiece by the great Billie Joe Armstrong. Even after 15 years of writing songs, this guy just isn't showing any signs of slowing down. The second track, Too Much Too Soon is a non-album track but is still good enough to make another band's greatest hits collection. This was the first Green Day CD that has a parental advisory sticker, but I don't think it's really warrented; there's only a few curses. For only 3 bucks, this single is a steal.

This is Green Day at their best. I am very glad to see, that they hooked up with Rob Cavallo again. "Warning" had some good songs, but Rob's production was sadly missed. With him back in the producer's seat, Green Day's sound is back to it's full glory. Powerfull guitars, the bass mixed to the front and perfectly gated drums. Both songs on this single are brilliant. "Too much too soon" could be an A-side by itself, and you should definitely pick up the single for this song alone. Two full speed power pop classics for less than 3 dollars ! And the "American Idiot" full length CD is brilliant as well !

Wow... I'm seeing some great examples of American Idiots just by reading these reviews!

It's amazing how closed minded some people are.

Anyways, great album! I got to see them live during their first show on this tour - and I was impressed. You definately get your money's worth. :)

The single, although fun, is too cookie-cutter for me. The same distorted riffs get played over and over, but I appreciate the lyrics and the message of the song; one highly appropriate for the times we live in.

I'd just wait for the American Idiot album. You can get it if you know where to look right now, but I'll be one of the first to buy it when it comes out in a week.

After waiting four long years (and going through one "new-wave" side-project), I was pumped for new Green Day. Having been a fan since I was a wee youngen, I had high expectaions...and they were met with "American Idiot." The hard-edged political punk song is fantastic, and is the perfect way to kick off the revival of punk's three princes. The only reason I could not give the CD a full 5 stars is due to the fact that GD usually has 2 or 3 b-sides, but only one here. Still fantastic and a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars b-sides worth it, May 1, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
The only reason i would get this album is for the b-sides, totally worth it... other then American idiot, got old fast... and yes it is still punk because if you havn't noticed alot of punk bands have songs about how much they hate the government, but other then that lets get down to the b sides!
alright, Shoplifter is a great song, still into the American Idiot album storyline, its about The Jesus of Suburbia and St. Jimmy living on the streets.
Governater.... so green day punk-like kick ass awesome song! best song on this album, with Mike Dirnt singing lead vocals (NOT BILLIE JOE!!!!) and just a great riff about the governer of california, yeah you know the derrr from terminater... well anyway, i suggest this album JUST for the b-sides, you wanna comment me, xxxjesus_0f_suburbiaxxx@yahoo.com and the 0 in 0f is a zero not a capital O.

5.0 out of 5 stars quite awsome, March 26, 2006
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
i really enjoyed all the songs on this single. american idiot, of course, one of their recent superhit charttoppers that they have been called sellouts for(which they are NOT. i really think people are somewhat jelous and resent them becomeing so popular and sucessful, BUT i wont get into that now..). well, AI is a truely great song(gee, maybe tahts why its so popular, eh? to the point of making your ears bleed i am told, but i dont listen to the radio, so.). there is also shoplifter and governater. shoplifter is sort of reverting back to their old warning style a bit, but still with a bit more of their new AI era feel. very good, addictive song. mike dirnt(the bass player, and my god) wrote and sings teh lead vocals in governator. it is really a very great song, my absoloute favorite of the 8(?) or so songs mike has written, and definatly one of my fafvorite songs overall. but it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Americamn Heroes Of Punk, February 23, 2005
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
Green Day has really been away from the industry for such a very long time. Yet, they really came back very well in a vengence. Their comeback track, AMerican Idiot really brings their fell back to the mainstream, especially after their lackluster album Warning. The song here is a very well charged and fierce rock anthem for anti-Bush fans who are just tired of hearing him not care about youth. It is juat a fusion of hard-driving punk that hasn't been in our lives inquite a longtime. It is juat a great pop song, and a must listen to for Green Day fans. I actually enjoy this hard core song.

Song: B+
