Leinwand brings a historical perspective to the current immigration debate, showing that the controversy about how many immigrants to admit, what the criteria should be, and how to enforce the policy is as old as the republic itself. He reveals the racism in the melting pot argument and discusses in some detail and with lots of quotes and examples how waves of new immigrants have always been looked on as a threat to "real Americans." The writing style is sometimes dull, but it's enlivened by quotes from a diversity of sources and by occasional fine photos. Sources are well documented in notes at the back, and there are a glossary and a bibliography. Hazel Rochman
