Grade 7 Up-- This excellent entry to the series presents the histories of Native American women from pre-contact to the present day. Beginning with a chapter discussing prevailing images and stereotypes, Green blends history and culture to bring the story up-to-date. She discusses the fact that 12% of tribes today have female leaders, representing a return to the traditional place of women in such societies after their displacement by European conceptions of their roles. There have been several biographies of Cherokee chief Wilma Mankiller in the past year, but one gets the impression from those titles that she is an anomaly. This book puts her firmly back into the strong Indian tradition of female leadership. Black-and-white photographs with very good captions appear throughout the book, as do poems by Indian women. A full-color center section presents contemporary artwork. An index, glossary, and fine bibliography round out this important book.
