Book Description

Men-at-Arms March 26, 1992
The American Indian Wars, the most famous of which were fought on the great Western plains between 1860 and 1890, were among the most tragic of all conflicts ever fought. To the victor went no less than the complete domination of the continent, to the loser total extinction. Accustomed only to small scale skirmishing and raiding, the Indians were doomed from the start. They had never fought a European-style war with its constant pressure and co-ordinated strategies. Philip Katcher details the armies of both sides, paying particular attention to their organization and uniforms.

As a re-enactor of 19th century military personnel, the pictures in this book are a great guide for assisting me with keeping my uniforms authentic to the time periods I am recreating.

This review is from: The American Indian Wars 1860-1890 (Men at Arms Series, 63) (Paperback)
A limited summary of a Thirty 30 year war. The photos and illustrations were fine, however, the written componet lacked the detail students of history need. I was somewhat disappointed with the overall content. I was looking for the detail to fully comprehend the lack of understanding between the Indian and the US Government to allow a war to continue over three decades.
