After more than fifteen years, this initial volume of the American Film Institute Catalog series is again in print. The 1920s set covers the important filmmaking period when "movies" became "talkies," and the careers of many influential directors and actors were launched. Films such as Wings, The Phantom of the Opera, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Jazz Singer are included in this volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL OUTSTANDING, I THINK February 12, 2013
It sure was outstanding in 1971. We only had the FILM DAILY YEARBOOKS and PHOTOPLAY photocopies from the B.F.I.
I never compared it with the AFI web catalog. If I were still young, I'd still prefer the print edition.
The credits are not always complete but the casts, with roles, are. You can find some mistakes in the summaries, but one of the minor pleasures of a movie buff is finding mistakes.

The INDEXES volume is very, very good: the general index includes everybody, actors as technicians, screenwriters, producers, directors.
The second index states the literary and dramatic source credits, a facility that you could find only in THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
The third index (184 pages)identifies movies by subjects.

It's not that expensive for two new volumes. Anyway you don't use electricity and you save the planet; anyway the trees would have been
poisoned by disorderly tourists. You can tell your nephews that you want it and that you are considering a new will.
