The Best Book Available on American Lighthouses,
By N. McKittrick (Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Lighthouses, 2nd: A Definitive Guide (Paperback)
Bruce Roberts and Ray Jones have produced a number of outstanding, authoritative yet reader-friendly books about lighthouses, but this one is their best yet! Bruce's award-winning photography combined with Ray's interesting, informative text make this book a treasure trove of facts, insights, and beautiful visuals. The Introduction provides the most comprehensive but easy-to-understand summary of lighthouse history available. As an added bonus the authors include detailed directions to the lighthouses as well as visitor information and tips on taking your own photographs to document your visit. This book is a must-have!

American Lighthouses offers a brief history of the Lighthouse, not to long and just right. It is very interesting and the photos are excellent. I have visited several American Lighthouses and the directions given here are easy to understand. The history often includes detailed information about the designer and builder and the Lighthouse Attendant. I found their lonely lives to offer insight into what it was like to attend a Lighthouse. This book divides the coast line and the Great Lakes and Rivers into sections, completing each section before moving on. If you enjoying Drawing and painting Lighthouses as I do you will find many wonderful subjects. I think the Author accomplished his mission.

The excellent book is quite useful and fascinating to anyone who is obsessed by there great and magnificent architectures! This book not only describes the history, location of American lighthouse but also provides a definitive guide for visiting information, which is familiar for the beacon-lovers like me to pay an impressive visit to it and watch the lighthouse in site. However, there is a suggestion I'd like to say, If the pictures in this book can be larger and more, that will make the book much better! Anyway, a worth-reading book!

I plan to visit as many lighthouses as I can and this was a good starting point. I liked the alphabetical index in the back and the many photos. There were a few maps, but I would like to have seen more complete or detailed ones for locating the lights.

As someone who sees lighthouses on the NH Seacoast, I wanted to find out more about lighthouses in general- and ordered this book. While it is a good collection of quick facts, it has made two glaring omissions- the Boon Island Lighthouse off York Maine is not mentioned (and that is a dangerous place!) and the Plum Island Lighthouse seems to be refered to as as the Newburyport Range Lights - which are the only intact pair of navigational lighthouses still standing.on the waterfront near downtown Newburyport MA. If there are two glaring errors such as this within a 30 mile stretch of coastline, how many others may be within this book?
