Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

American Lullaby's Niagara of talent--Maria Muldaur, David Grisman, Sweet Honey in the Rock--is enough to make anybody rush, unashamedly, toward a warm glass of milk and a tuck-in. But to fully grip this CD's terrificness, you have to hold it in your hands. As with every record in Ellipsis' Lullaby series, this package is sewn up with honest-to-goodness artistry. Nestled into a dreamy-looking cardbord box (no jagged jewelcases here) is a boardbook, chock-a-block with more of the outer box's excellent artwork, and inside that is a pamphlet and the CD itself, each peeking out of a private cubby. In the eyes of the average lullaby buyer, such stunning presentation might merit sloppiness in the liner note department, but there's no such slackness here. Every artist thoughtfully explains his or her contribution, followed by a brief bio. Perfect for flag-wavers, fans of roots music, and anybody who favors a meaningful drift-off to a good night's sleep. --Tammy La Gorce

I was impressed with the cover art, and excessive packaging, but when I heard the music, I would have been satisfied with a brown paper wrapper. This CD is for both children and adults, with high production quality and a variety of intricate arrangements. Anyone who appreciates beautiful music will enjoy this remarkable collection of folk, gospel, and old country music, which offers broad appeal with a consistent focus. I thought the vocals on Susie Tallman's "Hush Little Baby" were angelic, and that was my favorite track.

I love this CD. I had purchased Celtic Lullaby, produced by the same company. I love it and love the presentation. I was looking for just the right gift for friends who have kids. I chose this because the tracks are great for grown up's as well as baby. This is a great gift for anyone who's got kids. I really dug the choice of tracks on the CD: Sweet Honey and the Rock and even a rendition of Love Me Tender. The artwork is nearly as much to marvel at as the songs themselves. Really great CD, super duper gift.

This is by far our favorite lullaby cd. The music is so beautifully soothing... some songs almost hauntingly beautiful. We listen to it with our 15 month old twin girls as part of their bedtime routine. I highly recommend it.

I started listening to this CD before my twin boys were born, so I could be able to sing along to all the songs when they arrived. Even if you're not a natural born singer, the songs are really catchy, with soothing arrangements that will calm a sleep deprived dad.

Now the CD is part of our bedtime routine. Humming the tunes has also helped calm our babies during fussy times. Choosing good music for babies is important. Make sure you choose something you like - your babies will respond well if the music makes mommy/daddy happy too!

My almost 2 year old granddaughter requests this be turned on even when we are not napping. She tries to sing along to the soothing songs. Great music investment for our whole family!

A friend bought me this when I was pregnant. I started listening to it just after our son was born, and although he was too young to care at the time, I just really enjoyed it. Now it's part of our bedtime routine. If the baby is fussy because he is tired, we turn it on and he's immediately calm!
Our favorite for bedtime is #7, "Resophonic Lullaby". It's a Hawaiian lullaby that transports us directly to a beach when we hear it!
Our more-upbeat favorite is #4, "Song for Two Pamelas". It's a guitar duet, which sounds boring but is so fun and playful. I get the baby's toes tapping to this one and he laughs.
I also really like #9, "My Creole Belle". It's so obvious the singer is singing to someone he truly loves.
I won't mention them all, but they're all great. You can sing them to your little one and they'll love you even more for it.

We received this CD as a gift before our first, and only, son arrived this past Spring. To be honest I was looking forward to hours of old lullibies as I was having to spend money on purple dinosaurs and stuffed animals with weird geometric shapes growing out of their heads forced on us by the Brits. However, my wife and I were more than pleasantly surprised.

This folk take on the classic lullibies is a winner. We can listen to it everyday . . . and we do! Within a few minutes, our son is sound asleep or at least calm and quiet and we're singing along (usually offkey). It reminds of Mermaid Avenue by Billy Bragg and Wilco who brought Woody Guthrie back to life with a "sound that raised the roofs of the old barns. Just what Woody would have done."

And now, we've given out three as gifts!
