This review is from: The American Marathon (Sports and Entertainment) (Paperback)
Pamela Cooper has provided a great deal of historical background regarding the event that we now call "the marathon," with a particular emphasis on its development in the United States (naturally, as per title). This is not an expanded running magazine article; this a thoroughly documented and scholarly history, with numerous references and footnotes to guide the reader to further research and original sources. Rather than focusing on particular elite runners, as many treatments of the subject have done, the history here emphasizes societal developments that encouraged the sport to grow to the mass participation event we know today. The involvement and evolution of the sport among particular ethnic groups, and the reasons for that, were particularly interesting.
