5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Alice, May 10, 2003
This review is from: American McGee's Alice (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
First off, for this price I would definately recommend buying the item. But for all of you who might need a little more than a vague statement, here's the deal. "American McGee's Alice" is a beautiful and addicting game; the art and visuals are breath taking and you just might spend most of your time staring at your screen in delight. The designers went well out of there way creating an atmosphere that makes "Alice" unlike any game that I have seen. Twisted and bizarre, the locales are also witty and enchanting. Alice herself, is a well voiced and fun character, with a new found penchant for violence and brutality. Anyone who has read the original Wonderland/Looking Glass stories will not doubt find this version of Alice much more akin than that of certain other sources, and American McGee shines in their complete understanding of the source. What the game does suffer from is some erratic controls and (in certain places) a rushed feel. In general, Alice control fairly nicely, and most certainly in the beginning most players shouldn't be too paralyzed by her movements. However, there are some areas of the game that require controlled movement that Alice isn't capable off. The designers did include a handy "foot" marker that can help Alice pinpoint (to a degree) where she will jump. But on moving objects it is usless. Ms Alice also seems to suffer from some sort of foot malady, as she has the tendency to continue to move after she lands, thus leaving you tumbling into lava, water, or nothing at all. This can be frusting and lead some players to the same level of insanity that Alicer herself is facing. As for being rushed, the ending was a bit short sided, and some of the sequences didn't make much sense and felt a bit choppy, for instance the sequence from the Red Realm into Mirror Image has still left me totally in the dark. But those can be overlooked in favor of the outstanding satisfaction that the game provided. Each level is something to be seen, and I have found myself replaying areas just to revisit a particularly fun area. Again, at this price "you'd be crazy" not to try it out...ha ha...sorry darlings; bad joke, I know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous game with great atmosphere but VERY linear, August 8, 2002

I enjoyed playing this game quite a bit thanks to its engrossing graphics and great ambiant soundtrack but it ultimately amounted to the most linear shooter I've ever played. I tend to like pretty linear games but the gameplay in this one was just not compelling. Like every other shooter you basically just wander around killing monsters until you get to the end. There were some puzzles strewn about but they never required any real strategy or thinking.

Also the story was weak. From my point of view there really wasn't any story at all. The premise was interesting but there just wasn't any real plot to go with it. This game was disappointing because it could have been so much better. I wish more game developers would get smart and add a more RPG like experience to shooters.

Still, I enjoyed the game quite a bit in spite of its flaws and am sad to see it has become a bargain bin title so quickly. It deserved better. It really is an amazing visual experience. The levels (worlds) in the game are quite compelling and fun to explore. Considering the price I recomend that you check this game out unless you really just don't like shooters. Do keep in mind though that this game demands a decent system in order to take full advantage of it's gorgeous textures. It ran smoothly, though a little slower than I like, at 1024*768 on a Radeon 8500 and Athlon 950. Also it was a completely bug free experience.

I should also mention that the weapons in this game are quite a bit different than standard shooter fare and help make the game more interesting.

4.5 stars. Really, the only negative with this game is that once you finish the game, that's it. If you return to this genuinely nightmarish realm of the gothic, surreal, and macabre the only variation is in the level of difficulty in the initial settings page. I played the "easy" level all the way through and Alice died countless times. With that in mind...feel free to save the game at any point, particularly after long sections of exploring or after theatrical scenes or you may have to go through it all over again. Besides that, there is so much to recommend about this game from an entertainment perspective. The game seems to go on forever, loaded with twisted yet familiar characters that may help or hinder Alice's progress, and the journey never becomes boring or tedious. The only times I found to be monotonous were when I forgot to save the game and had to run through the dark corridors battling the same foes once more. Also, there is a very good reason why the music for this game is available on CD. It is creepy and ambient and elevates the gaming experience to an entirely new level it would not have had otherwise. This game is constantly interesting...and oftentimes bloody! All in all, considering the hours I spent enthralled with this ten-dollar game, the return value was/is fantastic! Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun ride through the world of Alice, with a dark twist..., March 4, 2003

This game stands out, to me, because as a kid I have always been fascinated by the Alice in Wonderland story. It grabs your imagination and takes you away. Alice, the game, is faithful to the concept, but adds a few dark twists here and there (which don't detract from the Alice theme). Gameplay can be quite hard if you're not used to first-person shooters, but it's worth it to go through this whole game. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was left in awe at the graphics. Alice uses the Quake 3 engine, which should stand up to scrutiny graphics-wise for at least 5 more years. The price for this game is a steal considering the amount of gameplay within. It'll keep you busy for many many hours. If you're at all interested in Alice, buy this game and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surreal and brilliant!!!, September 6, 2002
This review is from: American McGee's Alice (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
When I first read aboiut this game I was intrigued. I've always been a fan of fairy tales and other folklore. This bizare and violent sequel is a far cry from the fun, and slightly demented, original story. Luckily, I also enjoy more twisted versions of fairy tales, too, and Alice does not disappoint!
The gameplay is rather linear, and the controls can be somewhat cumbersome in certain situations, especially during jumping obstacles. However, the graphics and sound are outstanding, even on my 500mhz P3 with 192megs of RAM and a 64meg Geforce2 video card.
So if you like twisted and very dark games give this one a whirl, for this new price you just can't go wrong!!!

This is one of the most visually pleasing games I have ever played. I don't usually like jumping games, but for this game I've made an exception. The game is quite surreal, and very dark. The toys (read weapons) Alice uses are very imaginative, and if you don't move Alice for a while she'll run an animation associated with the toy she's currently wielding. It's Alice in Wonderland for grownups. You can't beat the price, so if you have the system to run it, buy the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark game to just love, October 5, 2004

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: American McGee's Alice (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
When I saw an ad for this game, something just drew me to it. I don't know if it was just the twistedness of my mind, or the game just looked good. We have the story of alice who is a few years older with a darker hair color to match her dark persona. She may have returned happy from wonderland before, but now she survived a fire that killed her family and is a local at the mental instatution. She is called back to wonderland and wonderful it is not as the queen of hearts now rules with an iron fist. All the old characters are back in a twisted way and the errie music that accomponies this game truly sets the mood. A good game but kinda hard to control at first. I would love it if this would be a movie (an interesting concept actually) but a game you should definately get and a deal at the price nowadays.

Wow. This game is incredible. The worlds are facisinating, and the characters the same. Alice's little wonderland from her childhood has been twisted and tortured into a dark land of misery and death. The Queen of Hearts reigns down upon Wonderland with such malice as one would expect in a biography of Hitler. But enough about that. The only problems with the game are 1)It's annoyingly linear 2)The controls are bit tricky to get used to and 3)IT NEEDS A LOT OF HIGH REQUIREMENTS!!

American McGee's Alice is one of the first games to utilize id Software's Quake 3 Arena engine and its developers, Rogue Software, do so superbly. The levels are architecturally complex and original. Some take place in mushroom villages where the inhabitants have rather ingeniously adapted the underground fungi to places of residence, others occur in fantastical libraries where books float around carelessly, and even stranger are the black & white chess levels where only small hints of color can be found. This makes for a very visually pleasing game that is an immense joy to wander about in but it seems that Rogue Software forgot what gaming is all about -fun and entertainment. Fighting the enemies within the world of Alice quickly becomes more of a tedious task than an enjoyable challenge. Too many times I found myself reloading after certain fights so I could leave the battle with more ammunition and health points. Rogue could have easily fixed this by providing more health power ups but failed to. After only going a few levels into the game on the Normal difficultly setting I was forced to restart at the Easy setting. Things were much better but I still found much of the combat pointless and frustrating. For the twisted visuals and eccentric characters, American McGee's Alice is head and shoulders above its contemporaries but do not expect the same kind of thrill that you would receive from Quake II.

This game was a thrill, when I first started out playing it, it seemed alrite, after playing it for a while I actually felt apart of the horror that was in it. Very exciting game, I seriously suggest buying it, and for a price like this, you WILL be pleased. Don't think that I'm making it sound easy, beacuse it sure isn't, you have to deal with villans lurking around every corner, and the best part of it all is that it's so graphic with the killings. I'm not about to give all the good stuff away, so just take my advice AND BUY IT!!! Hehehe, ok well that's all I have to say, oh and if this game excites you, I also suggest 'the undying'.
