Editorial Reviews

Tubist, David Zerkel put a great deal of thought toward the selected works for the unique contribution each work held independently as well as collectively for this recording. The selected literature is by American composers and was originally written for the tuba. He also opted to include literature that was composed with the CC or BB-flat tubas in mind. We hope you will enjoy this recording.

I studied with David Zerkel while I was an undergraduate at the University of Georgia, and I can say that he is a fantastic musician and human being. He is a great mentor and role model for his students and, during my 4 (...ok...5) years, I learned so much from him. It's great that he decided to record two pieces of standard repertoire for the tuba (Persichetti Serenade XII, and Hartley Sonata No. 1) that were previously unavailable on a digital format. He has done the tuba community (Yes...there is such a thing, believe it or not!) a huge favor. The more recent pieces (Cheetham, Woodward, and Gillingham) are in a more neo-romantic style and can be appreciated by listeners of any almost any background. Zerkel's sound is smooth and warm and, as you can hear on the CD, the musical line is always the most important aspect of any of his performances. Even if you don't play the tuba, you should get this CD. You won't regret it!

Supurb playing by David Zerkel and a much needed quality recording of some standard pieces of the solo tuba repertoire. Although recording/mixing solo tuba and piano presents difficult and unique challenges, the recording quality here is merely adequate. Still, though, a "must have" recording for the serious high school/college tuba student.

Zerkel's choice of material is excellent. For those who are not familiar with some of the classic pieces in the contemporary tuba and euphonium literature, this is a superb introduction, with a nice mix (as the title states) of "old" classics (late 60's and 70's) with stuff right off the press. The recording quality is excellent as are the performances.
