Previous editions have been widely used in undergraduate and graduate courses.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The necessity of continually reappraising strategy in shifting international and domestic environments makes it essential that policymakers and the attentive public alike have a clear understanding of the fundamental policy and process challenges that confront the nation. The authors of this sixth edition have provided a timely and valuable contribution toward gaining that understanding.

(James Schlesinger, former Secretary of Defense, from the foreword )

Review

A classic text, widely used in universities... It does an exemplary job of explaining the process of defining and implementing national security objectives. Hardly any significant subject is omitted from this very rich and readable volume.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tough Read, Too Theoretical and voluminous, December 26, 2010
The emphasis on voluminousity is what does this book a disservice! I got lost pretty quickly and have to tailor specific chapters according to my needs. While the book does a really good job on the theoretical sense, it never really brings together the real life workings in the national security environment. Overall the book is more of an academic approach to national security. It's more or less a "students book", not so much a practitioners book
