Book Description

September 1, 2001 American Nature Writing
Nationally recognized nature writer and anthologist John A. Murray has compiled his ninth volume of some of the best new nature writing by both well-known and emerging writers. The selections in this year's edition span many environments, from Glenn Vanstrum's look at the faraway wild of the arctic's Brooks Range to Penelope Grenoble O'Malley's examination of suburban life in the Santa Monica Mountains north of Los Angeles to Jill Hindle's odyssey from raucous, diverse New York City to a new home in peaceful Saxtons River, Vermont. The stories in this year's collection continue a tradition that editor John Murray has established for previous editions-these are all testimonials to the power of place, and its central hold on our lives. And they have in common a passion to witness nature in all its various strongholds, wild, urban, and in-between. As a special feature of this and forthcoming annual editions, Murray has created a William O. Douglas Nature Writing Award, given this year to New Mexican poet and essayist Penny Harter. For fellow nature writers, students and teachers, and readers who value the wisdom of landscapes, American Nature Writing: 2002 offers a satisfying journey.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit and miss., November 18, 2003

This review is from: American Nature Writing: 2002 (Paperback)
I enjoyed a number of the writings in this book. I have read all the American Nature Writing series books over the past years except for the first year (1994?). In my opinion, when this series was published by Sierra Club Books, the writing was better. The last year of the Sierra Club published books was 1998. I highly recommend that a person interested in nature writing seek out these out-of-print volumes. The books published by the Oregon State Univ. in this series were hit and miss for me - and there were a lot of misses.
