3.0 out of 5 stars Barber's "A Hand of Bridge" makes this one worthwhile, February 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 3 American One-Act Operas (Audio CD)
Of the three one-act operas on this CD, Barber's "A Hand of Bridge," the shortest work, is the highlight. The composer's characterizations of the four participants in a bridge game are wonderfully disparate and woven together. This work alone makes the CD worth getting. Schuman's "The Mighty Casey" is also a very enjoyable opera, but the abridgement here makes the action and story of the opera difficult to follow. A full recording of 'Casey' would be recommended instead. Rounding out the three operas on the disc, Blizstein's "The Harpies" is harsh on the ear.
