Book Description

0691037957 978-0691037950 August 8, 1994

This work completes the three-volume catalog of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's outstanding collection of American painting. Volume I focuses on an important collection of some 315 paintings by nearly 120 artists dating from the early eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The museum's collection features eighteenth-century portraits and history paintings by such important artists as John Smibert, Joseph Blackburn, John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, and John Trumbull. Works of art by the founders of the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, along with America's most successful genre painters, William Sidney Mount and George Caleb Bingham, are also included in this catalog. The catalog proceeds chronologically, providing a thorough discussion of each painting, a biography of the artist, bibliographical references, an exhibition history, and information on provenance.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The publication of this tome completes the three-volume set documenting the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American paintings that were created by artists born before 1864. (The other volumes are Natalie Spassky's A Catalog of Works by Artists Born Between 1816 and 1845 and Doreen Bolger Burke's A Catalog of Works by Artists Born Between 1846 and 1864.) Consisting mainly of portraits-but also including genre paintings and Hudson River School landscapes-the collection is presented chronologically by birthdate of artist with his or her paintings then listed in order of creation. Painstakingly researched entries include discussions of the artist's career, major subjects, related works, exhibition history, and provenance. Representing years of detailed sleuthing and sure to become a standard reference, this thorough scholarly offering is highly recommended for academic libraries and related American art collections.
