Besides disease information, you'll appreciate the 70 symptom charts--find your symptom (lump, wheezing, impaired vision, abdominal pain, for example) and follow the flow chart, which pins down specifics and makes suggestions. You can also learn first aid and read about drugs, surgery, and rehabilitation.
[...] --Joan Price
The book is organized in sections. "Taking Control of Your Health" discusses genetics, health, and health care at different stages of life; and lifestyle issues such as diet, exercise, safety, and substance abuse. "Assessing Your Symptoms" is a series of color-coded flow charts. Some are general and others are specifically for men, women, or children. They guide users through the process of analyzing symptoms and deciding when to seek medical care. "Looking for Disease" covers medical examinations, laboratory tests, and imaging techniques. "Your Body and Disease" discusses various illnesses and disorders. It is organized by type of disease as well as by organ system. Sections on genetic disorders, cancer, infections and infestations, and serious injuries and environmental disorders explain how each condition occurs and how it is diagnosed and treated. The sections on organ systems begin with a discussion of anatomy and physiology. Articles about diseases and disorders and how they affect bodily functions follow. "Treating Disease" covers drug treatment, surgery, care, and therapies (rehabilitation, psychotherapy, alternative/complementary therapies, and first aid). A drug glossary and a directory of agencies and Web sites complete the work.
The illustrations are the outstanding feature of this encyclopedia. Color drawings, photographs, and charts explain, among other things, how bacteria and viruses cause infection, how cancer develops and spreads, and how wounds heal. There are also illustrations of organs and systems, diagnostic and surgical procedures, and first-aid techniques. This volume is an excellent companion to The Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide [RBB D 1 99], which has greater depth of content and fewer illustrations. Because both volumes are reasonably priced, all libraries can afford to update their consumer-health collections with these excellent new sources.

American College Of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide,

This review is from: American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (with Interactive Human Anatomy CD-ROM) (American College of Physicians Homecare Guides) (Hardcover)
I am a frequent buyer of updated home medical books, and have pretty much seen them all. This one is quite superior! It is easy to find various medical conditions, complete in its coverage, and written in a way that the average layperson will understand. The illustrated color pictures are very well done, a rare treat, and contribute well to one's understanding of the copy. In short, it's the best home medical book I've ever seen. I recommend it without reservation.

This complete guide truelly is in a league of its own.,
By Brett Heintz (San Diego, Ca) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (with Interactive Human Anatomy CD-ROM) (American College of Physicians Homecare Guides) (Hardcover)
The authors, publishers and editors put incredible effort into this comprehensive guide and desreve some high praise. Not only is it a self help guide, but it is very educational too. As a physiology graduate student I am highly impressed with its graphics and easy to follow/understand guides and information. It doesn't just explain the symptoms as other "complete guides" do, but it first provides educational info. on how the deseases infect your cells and/or how the body works to fight it off, second it provides symptoms, and third what you should do and what your doctor may do. This guide is truelly amazing from its easy to follow flow charts to its comprehensive drug reveiw. Again, it goes well beyond others in its class. Furthermore the quality of the book is striking; all pages glossy w/ full color pictures. The cost of the book is only 40$ (28$ at amazon) which is well worth its cover. Remember the easiest way to treat a symptom is to treat it early and that is where this guide comes into play; as well as educational purposes.

A must for every home library...,

This review is from: American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (with Interactive Human Anatomy CD-ROM) (American College of Physicians Homecare Guides) (Hardcover)
It's difficult to review something so extensive in just a few paragraphs so I'll keep it as simple as possible........Bought this book for my parents and am going to buy one for myself right now. Will probably give a copy to my cousin who's just starting college. An extremely helpful and informative medical reference guide - over 1000 pages. Very well organized. The information is presented in many different ways so that all types of readers can understand - photographs, illustrations, charts, graphs, tables - simple and thorough. If this book doesn't have the answer - it will point you in the right direction to find it.... In my opinion a must for every home reference library like a dictionary or a thesaurus. If you have reservations about purchasing it on-line, this book is worth checking out at your local bookstore.
