American Pickers Season 1

Editorial Reviews

Review

Standing tall as one of the best reality shows on television...The idiom one man's trash is another man's treasure is the perfect fit for [this] highly entertaining History Channel series... --Pittsburgh Tribune Review

American Pickers will have you looking at old barns, dusty attics and cluttered yards in a whole new light. There's something magical about watching two grown men digging through heaps of garbage and coming away with a van full of vintage Americana. The downside? Hoarders will suddenly feel justified in hanging on to everything. --In Utah This Week

American Pickers, the terrific new reality series from History, is particularly good family viewing, giving young adults an understanding for hard work, self-reliant hustling, an appreciation for the old and the used and the forgotten things in this world, as well as for the quirky, independent citizen-individuals that populate this great land of ours, and most importantly, a hankering for some good old-fashioned American capitalism, in its purest form. I highly recommend American Pickers. --DVD Talk

Product Description

Product Description

In small towns, and along America s back roads, treasures are waiting to be uncovered--valuable relics from our history that are hidden in junk piles, buried in barns and stacked in garages. It takes experts to find them...and turn rust to riches. Season One of AMERICAN PICKERS on HISTORY follows highly skilled pickers Mike Wolfe, owner of Antique Archaeology in Iowa, and his business partner Frank Fritz, as they hunt down objects with historical, collectible and pop culture value that have been long forgotten by their owners. From a vintage Harley to a one-of-a-kind Ferris wheel, each treasure hunt uncovers weird and wonderful Americana, offering a glimpse into a little-known side of the antiques business. Along the way, Mike and Frank meet people whose own stories open a window into American lives and history.

DISC 1 (4 episodes, approx 180 min): Big Bear / Super Scooter / White Castle on the Farm / Invisible Pump

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Company. Great Show! April 3, 2012

If you are even thinking about buying this then you already know that the show is amazing! I absolutely LOVE it. So I'm not gonna talk about the show, I'm gonna talk about what everybody is talking about and that is the PATHETIC history channel. BEWARE!!!!! Most of the DVDs they offer are not the full season. They are using a lame advertising tactic to make you buy this DVD which costs $2 a show. Absolutely ridiculous!!! Please make them do something about this and go to the historychannel.com and write to them how unhappy you are. I read numerous other people being upset about this and it pissed me off too so I wrote to them. Please pass the word so they can fix this and give us the ENTIRE season.

Now about this DVD itself, I decided to buy it because I thought this was the only season out of all offered that was complete. After getting it, I still think it's not. Very sad! :( Shame on you history channel!

5.0 out of 5 stars American Pickers...A TOP Pick May 21, 2010
Format:DVD
From the moment I saw a teaser for American Pickers in December, I couldn't wait to see the first show. As a former flea market and yard sale addict, I miss the days when you really could find some amazing pieces of American history or pop culture at such venues. But those days were gone decades ago. So the thought that I could enjoy that vicariously through this show was pretty intriguing.

And it did not disappoint. American Pickers is everything I hoped for and more. Mike and Frank really know their stuff, and the people they come across in their travels are a breed of American which is quickly disappearing...along with the treasures they have hidden in barns, garages, old opera houses, and even tunnels!

One of the charming attributes of this series is the way Mike and Frank relate to each other. There are none of the insane ego dramas which plague-no, make that completely destroy-other reality shows. And over the time that these two have worked and traveled together, they have developed a language all their own-something I have experienced myself with my business partner. It's very real, and quite funny at times. (I especially like when the guys are freestylin').

The pieces of history they unearth are truly amazing! Bicycles, scooters, motorcycles and sidecars. Visible gas pumps, a giant advertisng character with a movable arm. And don't forget Frank's favorites...oil cans, big little, round, square and beautifully kept or beautifully rusted. They even found a man who collects BUILDINGS! That's right, he has a White Castle hamburger joint in his front yard, and the General Store he shopped in as a boy in his back yard-fully stocked, of course-along with quite a few more buildings from his home town.

I love this show.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Like It June 19, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
This show is a fun follow along picking adventure. The only thing that I would like them to add is what they end up selling the items for, not just what they are deeming the retail value.

2.0 out of 5 stars cool stuff, questionable host intentions June 9, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I know it says in the intro to the show that these guys are out there looking for cool old "junk" they can turn into "treasure" or whatever - and as much as I enjoyed watching them find/encounter all these really awesome vintage/historic items, the taller guy (non-bearded) always left me the impression that he only liked coming across something really cool for all the $$ dollar signs $$ he could see in his head.
The way he talked to the owners of the items and basically tried to lowball and talk down the price at every turn and seemed to have this total air of unappreciation for the fact that these people decided to keep these items through the decades instead of throwing them away like the majority of society did. They are the only reason he has the opportunity to make money off these items and they are the whole reason his show can be a show at all.

I will concede that I only watched the first episode, and I did like the personalities of the bearded guy and Danielle, but the other guy got on my nerves so much I couldn't stand to watch any more, regardless of all the cool things that they probably do showcase on the show.

I'd take Antiques Roadshow over this any day!
