5.0 out of 5 stars Good Call, Madonna!
Is this even legal? Madonna covering American Pie. Yes I like the Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and harp on people who say music of the past is better than today's music, but I do have respect for a legend. When I first heard on the radio that Don Mclean liked Madonna's version I thought that this is scientiffically impossible. This song is to Rock & Roll...

1.0 out of 5 stars American Pie
I have always been a fan of APie so I was thrilled to hear a remake was happening with Madonna. When I heard the song, however, I was very disappointed. The singing was fantastic but the music totally destroyed what American Pie is all about. I am not a musician so I can't give you specifics but it just sounds like the music doesn't match the lyrics. It is like a...

This song is to Rock & Roll history what the Titanic disaster is to maritime history. Then, I listened to it and wow! It actually works. Perhaps, Madonna, aware of this song's legendary acclaim concluded that she--in all her splender--could never succesfully cover this song convincingly, and to try to reproduce it may spell the doom of her career. Was this legend the thing that would bring Mrs. Material Girl herself to her knees? Wisely, Madonna chooses to reinvent the song, to make it hers as if it were hers alone brought about for the first time in history by her and in a way only she could provide. Like it or hate it, you have got to give her credit for her bravity--bravity counter-balanced by alot of wisdom. Madonna knows a basic fundamental in music: "Don't ever try to recreate a legend. It will surely break you". Perhaps, this is Madonna's "rite of passage"--the challenge that could crush her is the very one that will take her to new heights in her career. And what do you know? She has Mclean's blessing!

5.0 out of 5 stars good job madonna, March 18, 2000

madonna has taken a classic rock song and reinvented it as her own. having removed the verses about buddy holly and early rock, she has recorded a song that is at once brilliant and poignant. madonna's vocals have never been better and i applaud her bravado for even attempting to "remake" this song. American Pie has become a classic in both incarnations.

5.0 out of 5 stars That's the spirit, Madonna!, May 18, 2000
This review is from: American Pie (Audio CD)
Madonna... When I hear that name it means good and elegant music. And this song was like that. I know that this isn't Madonna's own song and I must say that I like the original more, but this is still worth for buying, singing, listening... This is great song! I'm waiting for the movie "The Next Best Thing" so much!

5.0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE!, March 23, 2000
This review is from: American Pie (Audio CD)
Madonna is fantastic. Her is voice is wonderful. Her body is great. I used to hate this song. I still hate the original. But Madonna made me love this new version. Madonna simply rules. By the way, take a look at what Don McLean said about Madonna's cover":"Madonna is a colossus in the music industry and she is going to be considered an important historical figure as well. She is a fine singer, a fine songwriter and record producer, and she has the power to guarantee success with any song she chooses to record. It is a gift for her to have recorded American Pie. I have heard her version and I think it is sensual and mystical. I also feel that she's chosen autobiographical verses that reflect her career and personal history. I hope it will cause people to ask what's happening to music in America. I have received many gifts from God but this is the first time I have ever received a gift from a Goddess."

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning interpretation, May 2, 2000
This review is from: American Pie (Audio CD)
From day one, I was in love with the way Madonna turned American Pie into a joyous piece of earcandy! Too bad the American public didn't latch onto it fully...It could have been a damn good summer anthem!

The mixes here are very good and sound great. Anyone who doesn't at least tap their foot upon hearing them must surely be deaf or, at least, be a big heavy metal fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madonna does it again, April 27, 2000

When I first heard Madonna was covering this song I thought "what"! I never thought it would have worked. It seems I was very wrong. Not only does it work VERY well, but Madonna shines on this this track. I've heard others say that they think her vocals are weak on American Pie, but I think they are great. Madonna's vocals flow very well through the whole song, and her voice is absolutley beautiful. I think the Humpty Vission Radio Mix is my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have Faith, May 1, 2007

It is with great shock and dissapointment that I read some of the scathing reviews here relating to this song. Most of the "bad" reviews obviously comes from "older" people who find it difficult to adapt to the natural progression of music. This is Madonna's interpretation of the song, it is NOT Don McLean's version and never will be. Deal with it. If Don McLean can praise Madonna for her version of this song (which he has), why can't some of the other "sour" reviewers do the same? No one is asking them to buy this single, no one is asking them to even listen to it and no one is forcing them to like it.
Their subjective, narrow-minded and self involved (a very American trait) views should be kept to themselves and not try to force their point of view onto other people.
The world of music should be a democratic, let each and every one of us decide what music we like or don't.
Getting back to this release; it is the German 4 track version with the album version and some remixes. Never having been a fan of Victor Calderone, this trend continues here. The other remixes are not too bad, I kind of like Richard "Humpty's" versions, they're fun and energetic.

4.0 out of 5 stars I hated American Pie... untill..., April 26, 2000
This review is from: American Pie (Audio CD)
All I have to say is, before Madonna remade this song I thought it was one of the most over rated songs ever! And when I heard that my idol was remaking it I was horrified! Until I heard it! I could not believe my ears! She sings this song so amazing & brings out what Mr. Don McClane couldn't. Sorry Don!

You must buy this Maxi single, it has some amazing techno remixes on it. If you like the latest techno music she has been putting out, then you'll love the American Pie remixes!

Madonna's version of American Pie is a true classic - better than the original (if that was ever possible) and Don Mclean should consider it an honor. The dance mix of it is even better -- an excellent update -- catchy and a "must own".

5.0 out of 5 stars Note the Facts:, April 4, 2000
This review is from: American Pie (Audio CD)
The people that give this song one-star ratings haven't really listened to the song, (or they don't know true pop music). Madonna took this song and made it into the best it's ever been. Her voice fits the song better than the other guy's voice and the song is more apropriate for a woman to sing. In my state, this song has been at number one for about six weeks straight!
