I found this book to have an incredible amount of detailed information on the way early Americans lived. My children and I especially liked the informational pages on "How Butter Was Made", "How Pioneer Lived in Covered Wagons" and "How People Lived on Sailing Ships", among many others. Well illustrated and contains many great maps. We really enjoyed this book as part of our homeschooling history library.

We bought this to go with "Adventure in My Father's World." The stories are fiction, but our daughter has learned a lot from them. Most importantly, they have helped her learn to love history.

I got this to use for my homeschooling curriculum last year. My daughter absolutely loved it! She would read ahead all the time to find out how the story would turn out. It starts with the Spanish explorers, and goes up to American settlers heading west (I think, I can't remember exactly where it left off). What makes it so enjoyable is that it is written from the viewpoint of the children of the pioneers (some are girls and some are boys, so it's nice for both). Since each section is written about a different child during a different time, my daughter didn't get bored with the characters. There are review questions after each section. It's a great book to help your child get interested in history, even if you don't homeschool.
