I love the concept of historical fiction, but this book has a little too much fiction. For each section, there is a fictional story, using fictional characters, set in a specific time period/event. This book focuses too much on the fictional accounts. It didn't hold my kids' attention. Telling the real stories of what happened, in a winsome way, would be more interesting.

This book was a favorite to my boys when I first read it to them at 5 & 6. It's now a favorite of my daughters at ages 5 & 7. My boys, now older at 10 & 11 are all too willing to listen in and even when I tell them to start their own work, I will see their ears perked up to listen. While reading on of the stories this morning, my son said "Mom, I remember that story and how he used his knife to save the day. It was a favorite of mine!". I love books that evoke feelings of your childhood just at the thought of it (Stuart Little does it for me, as does A Little Princess).

It's a fun way to introduce your children to the historical time period of the start of America. When read with enthusiasm, I can't imagine any child not being interested.

I read this to my 1st grader and we really enjoyed it. Will definately use it for our younger child when she is old enough. The stories are usually told from a child's perspective and it really held our interest.

This book is made up of stories about boys and girls who lived in different places and times in our country. They are exciting stories. It is important, however to remember that these fictional stories represent real boys and girls who lived during this time in history. Awesome!
