At my friends daughters 2nd Birthday we gave her a Step 2 shopping cart and she got my girls 2 of these American Plastic shopping carts for their 2nd Bday(My girls and her daughter have Bdays less than a month apart) Her daughter also received a Circo brand shopping cart which was VERY VERY cheap and flimsy. Pretending we're describing the carts as a pack of playing...

Horrible and by far the WORST toy we ever gotten. I knew it the second we took it out of the box...I think my shoe weighs more than this thing. It was so cheap we actually threw it away because it wasn't even fit to give to Goodwill. This thing just constantly tipped over and the handle kept coming off. My daughter started screaming one day because her ARM was STUCK in the basket hole. DON'T get this particular cart! Out of the 3 toy shopping carts we owned The Little Tykes shopping cart was the best one by far.

Pretending we're describing the carts as a pack of playing careds: The Step 2 was King(if thats the highest one), American Plastic a Jack and the Circo is that card that doesn't serve any purpose, you always just put it right back in the box instead of throwing it away.

The American Plastic

*****CONS*****
~~~Well, if you are using it on bare floors(laminate, tile, etc) the wheels do not turn, they just scrape along the floor making that nails on the chalkboard sound. My daughters do not seem to notice the sound although it gives me goose bumps everytime. If they are bare floor and get to an area rug they can't get over unless they lift this up and then it normally tips over. If it is on carpet, the wheels do turn.
~~~It tips easily in the front and the back, my girls accidently knock their carts over and have to pick up their items on a regular basis. Neither of them really seem to mind, they just say "uh oh" and normally help eachother pick up their items.

*****PROS*****
~~~It is affordable, costs a lot less than Step 2 or Little Tikes(if you buy this in the store)
~~~It is easy to store and for parents to carry places since it is lightweight. I can easily carry both carts with 1 hand or stack them in their closet. They take up less space than the Step 2 did. Both of my daughters can also pick these completely up if they need to(say for instance when our tubby English Bulldog is laying in the middle of the foor sleeping and they can't get him to move(even after running into him several times)
~~~My girls LOVE them. To them, these are just fun grocery carts that they put their fake food, their dolls and other random items in to push around. They play with these every day, many times a day.
Overall I would give these a 3.75 STAR rating. If I were going to buy my daughters shopping carts, would I buy these? If I was on a limited budget, then yes, I'd definately buy these. But if I could afford to buy them 2 of the Step 2 shopping carts instead, I would definately buy those. The Step2(Step2 Little Helper's Grocery Cart) are super solid and sturdy, the wheels move smoothly on bare floor and carpet, go over rugs and will definately last a very long time. These American Plastics aren't made as well but I don't think they seem really cheap or like they'll break anytime soon. I'll post back with an update if I run into any problems with these carts breaking or anything. I don't think any of the shopping carts are meant to be used as a learning walker, they'll tip over but I have read a few posts that said the Little Tikes was the most sturdy for that although I'd still recommend a regular walker(like Vtech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker) as opposed to a cart geared towards 2years and up.
Also, like another poster said, don't buy the cart with the cardboard boxes, all 3 girls were ripping them open and getting mad that they were empty. Instead you can buy some of the plastic food or the best thing is to buy little boxes of animal crackers, cereal & raisins, etc. and then they actually get to eat their groceries : )
If you have any questions let me know and I will do my best to help you out : )
1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Toy - NOT Recommended, October 26, 2010
I bought this for my 14-month-old son who loves to push everything around the house: chairs, boxes, anything. He couldn't even get this thing to move. The wheels do not rotate correctly on floors. It works only moderately better on carpets. The handle comes off whenever he pulls it, and the entire cart assembly comes off if he tries to lift it.
Too terrible a toy to keep in circulation. Tomorrow it is getting taken apart and recycled. Don't waste your money on this.
We originally bought this for my daughter when she was an early walker, about 13 or 14 months old. It flipped CONSTANTLY. I took it away from her because she was using it as a support walker and this wouldn't do at all. We stuck with another toy walker she had until she became steadier on her feet. However,when she was about 18 months old and much more confident in her steps, this became and remains one of her favorite toys. She pretend shops, piles her toys in, chases the dog with it. So, while we weren't satisfied originally, its turned out to be an okay buy. P.S. - throw the boxes of play food away, they're a bit annoying, end up ripped up and all over the house anyway.
1.0 out of 5 stars Not the best toy on the market, January 29, 2012
My child got this for Christmas this year from a Grandparent. BY FAR THE WORST when it came to quality. Plus side, since my toddler is just going to break the toy anyways, it's not a complete waste. The boxes were destroyed in a week and the wheels are not too bad but half the time they work the other half we aren't so lucky. If this was a shopping cart I would have to use at a store,I would call it the annoying piece of garbage you have to put back because it doesn't do its job. It doesn't even deserve a star for its review.
The cart could be made a little better but a great deal for the money and is well received by children.
3.0 out of 5 stars Tips over very easily!, December 30, 2011
My 18 month-old loves this, but it does tip over very easily when she plays. She has already tipped it over once and fell forward, banging her head on the back of the basket. The trick is to push forward and not down, but try telling a toddler that. I didn't give this a "one" rating, because like I said, my daughter loves it and it is very cute. My daughter loves to push her "groceries" and her baby dolls around in it. It was very easy to put together and didn't really even need the direction. Obviously, with it's price compared to other shopping carts, you aren't getting the highest quality of product. And just to clear up any confusion, it does not come with play FOOD, it comes with play food BOXES.
I got this from a local ALDI store and its wonderful for my 3 year old. Cost me 9 bucks and its made in U.S.A. (Not sure about this amazon model but it's exactly the same as my local one)
I would say to all the negative reviews, you are giving a 3+ year toy to your 14 month old children then complaining that it is tipping. Children that young lean on things like this as if it's a walker.
As long as you arent expecting the world this is a pretty good cart.
My only real con is the wheels aren't the best on wood floors until there is weight in the cart since it's so light they tend to just drag
My 18 month old son loves to push things around and we thought this would be a great addition to his toys. It is very cheap! It is very light and does not hold the weight of his gental push. Every time he trys to push it the wheels won't turn and it's so light his gental push causes the whole thing to fall over and he topples down too. Not worth the money! Thank God we still have the box. It will be returned to the store.
adorable little shopping cart great for at home.... my kiddo loves pushing this thing around what i love so much about this one is that not only does it just snapped right in when putting together but requires no tools and of for some reason your kid makes the basket part come off you can just snapp it right back into place soooo worth it
