Book Description

0195300521 978-0195300529 October 27, 2005 abridged edition
Rock, country, pop, soul, funk, punk, folk, hip-hop, techno, grunge--it's all here. In American Popular Music: The Rock Years, Larry Starr and Christopher Waterman take readers on a fascinating journey through the rich historical and stylistic landscape of American rock. An abridged version of the authors' acclaimed American Popular Music: From Minstrelsy to MTV, this volume includes chapters 8-14 of the longer book along with new introductory and concluding chapters.
American Popular Music: The Rock Years traces the development of rock from its roots in the mid-1940s to its current state in the twenty-first century, integrating in-depth discussions of the music itself with solid coverage of the attendant historical, social, and cultural circumstances. It strikes a balance between musical analysis and social context, showing how rock and American culture have continuously influenced each other over time. Using well-chosen examples, insightful commentaries, and an engaging writing style, the authors highlight the contributions of diverse groups to the development of rock music, explain the effects of advancements in recording technology, and chronicle the growth of rock music as an industry. The book is enhanced by a rich illustration program; boxed inserts on significant individuals, recordings, and intriguing topics; and well-organized listening charts for recordings that are discussed in detail in the text. Remarkably accessible, American Popular Music: The Rock Years is ideal for introductory courses in the history of rock and roll and will encourage readers to become more critically aware listeners of rock music.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!, February 11, 2009
This review is from: American Popular Music: The Rock Years (Paperback)
Another book that I had bought for one of my classes, but this was required reading since it was one of the two main books we had for the course. BUT, I loved it. As many students of the recording industry can be, I loved reading all the lil tid-bits of history and getting insight to some of the artists and companies. A good read for those who love music and have a passion for knowing music history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good General Rock History with some Flaws, April 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: American Popular Music: The Rock Years (Paperback)
First off I was born in 61 and am have two older brother 4 and 10 years my senior. I was playing with my Tonka trucks on the living room floor when my brothers were playing the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and later Cream, Hendrix, Led Zepplin along with many more. So, I feel I lived the music of the sixties, seventies and eighties and am qualified to speak. With that in mind, this book over all, is a good solid text book on rock history, from the early years of the 50's where country and rhythm and blues were fusing in to a new style that was marketed specifically to teens with artist like Buddy Holly, Elvis and Chuck Berry on through the nineties. Even though I have studied American music history and rock in particular, I learned much from this text. However, there are some glaring gaps. To be fair there are only 320 pages but, they just don't do some artist and groups justice based on their respective record sales and concert draws. 70's/80's groups such as the Allman Brothers, ACDC, Bad Company, Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd or the genre of southern rock period. Wow, what a huge oversight. I realize when these guys say rock, they really mean popular music including soul, r&b, funk, contemporary country and so on. In light of that they need to broad brush and mention artist of note from a variety of genre's. But, please not to mention Foreigner and Journey in either the 70's or 80's chapter with all the hits between them strikes me as ridiculous. It would be like forgetting to mention the Stones and the Who in the 60's. It doesn't matter whether you like these groups or not, their record sales say much of America did. So, my gripes not withstanding, this is a good generalist starter text before moving on to texts that will cover specific genre's or decades in more detail.
