I brought this book as a psych resident and have gone back to it numerous times because I was under the impression that this was the "bible" for geriatric psychiatry and that it was one of those books that was a must-have on my shelf. Every time I went back to it b/c I saw a difficult patient and wanted to learn more about a particular topic, I always walked away disappointed. I personally got very very little from this book and would not recommend it. When I bought the book, I remember going right to the chapter on dementia as I had so many questions regarding its diagnosis/treatment/management/workup. The chapter was so unimpressive that I went to my neurology books which sadly enough offered more practical advice on the topic. I actually read through the majority of this book and chapter after chapter, the quality was the same.

The main thing I was looking for was practical clinical advice on picking and dosing medication, i.e. if PT has depression, what is first line medication and dosing pearls. On every topic (depression, bipolar, the various anxiety disorders...), the advice was general and the dosing range was basically that of adults. Basically, I can sum up 99% of what I learned about the medication from this book: start low, go slow, target same dose as you would adult, try to pick meds with least interaction, avoid polypharmacy. I found my "Manuel of Clinical Psychopharmacology" book, geriatric section, just as useful. I will be in search for another psycho pharm book for geriatric.
