Book Description

1585622370 978-1585622375 August 21, 2006 1
This one-of-a-kind resource covers both basic and clinical sciences for psychiatrists and psychiatry residents preparing for Part 1 of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Examination in Psychiatry. The American Psychiatric Publishing Board Prep and Review Guide for Psychiatry is a single text focusing exclusively on the examination's psychiatry topics, providing an organized and understandable review of material that the user presumably will have mastered but offering a practical means of reviewing that material and minimizing the need to consult multiple sources. It's an authoritative work that can be used with confidence, drawing on the latest editions of the APPI Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry, the APPI Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, and their "Essentials" editions.
The editors have provided a sufficiently detailed overview so that the book can serve as a primary source for psychiatry candidates. They have maintained a balance between succinctness and comprehensiveness while providing the proper emphasis on critical topics for study. The contents are arranged by topic to conform to coverage in the Examination. The first eleven chapters review basic sciences for psychiatric practice—functional neuropathology, genetics, immunology, and more—as well as such subjects as psychological assessment, cultural psychiatry, and legal issues. Subsequent chapters address the entire gamut of clinical syndromes along categories consistent with DSM-IV-TR classification, from cognitive disorders to anxiety to personality disorders, accompanied by chapters on the psychiatric interview, diagnostics, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and pain disorders. Among the guide's practical features:
  • Coverage of suicide, violence, women's mental health, and ethics is provided in separate chapters, since these topics bridge many syndromes
  • A single chapter on psychopharmacology addresses drug therapy applicable to the disorders covered in the syndrome chapters
  • Quick-reference tables summarize diagnostic criteria for specific psychiatric disorders.
  • Multiple-choice questions—derived from the APPI Study Guide to Clinical Psychiatry and Study Guide to Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences- appear at the end of each chapter, with annotated answers provided at the back of the book
With board certification more important now than ever, this review guide can help candidates approach their Part 1 Examination with greater confidence. It is also ideal for psychiatry residents who wish to prepare for the PRITE, or for psychiatrists in other countries facing similar examinations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful text, September 5, 2007
This review is from: The American Psychiatric Publishing Board Prep and Review Guide for Psychiatry (Paperback)
This book was a great find for me. It's a little bit expensive but well worth the money. The book contains 400 pages of very high yield information not only on Part I but also great, I believe, for the PRITE. Most prefers the Stein's, Update Board and Ward book at my program but that book was published in 2003,obviously out-of-date, and the Ivy League slant in that book is often nauseating. This book, on the other hand, is published by the APA, contain materials from 4-5 other texts from experts in the field, and referenced the 2006 APBN list of tested topics. In my opinion, this book is currently the best of its kind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good review text, October 12, 2007

Just took the PRITE recently, and felt this book decently prepared me for the exam, no doubt in large part because it's an APA publication. It's easy to read, a manageable length, and covers the basics pretty well. Some sloppiness, though, like not including the DSM IV-TR diagnostic criteria for ADHD in the childhood disorders section, while including the criteria for the other disorders in the chapter. Still, I like it, though it's definitely no substitute for reading a real text like Kaplan & Sadock Synopsis or at least the Concise text.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Weak Resource, October 8, 2007

This review is from: The American Psychiatric Publishing Board Prep and Review Guide for Psychiatry (Paperback)
Most of the material is not useful for ABPN Part 1. Very few questions follow each topic. Without more questions it is not easy to gauge whether you know the topic well enough, or what the take away points are.

Too much text. This APPI book seems like cut and pasted bits from various APPI sources rather than a useful original summary (i.e., REVIEW) of important topics. It also lacks clearly outlined study points.
