Welcome back, Misfits!,
By Lurch (Illinois) - See all my reviews

For those of you who have your lips super-glued to Glenn Danzig's ass, nothing but him will please you so I won't bother trying to convince you otherwise -- go listen to Danzig and stop bitching. For the rest of you who are a bit more open-minded, pick this little number up. It's got all the energy & spirit of the classic Misfits, with tighter playing and infinitely cleaner production (I love older albums like "Walk Among Us" too, but c'mon, they sound like the mics were two rooms away from the band!). The people who bash the 'fits now over Michale Graves generally aren't doing so because he's a bad singer (he's actually quite talented), they're only doing it because he's NOT DANZIG. Get over it! All bands & artists change at least a little over time, especially when the lineup changes, but if they're a quality band they have a signature sound that can't be erased. Listen to old Danzig-era Misfits, then listen to Danzig's latest solo work; you really gonna tell me it sounds the same? Do you believe the Misfits' sound wouldn't have evolved at all if Danzig had remained with the band to this day, considering how far removed from the Misfits his solo stuff has become? When all is said and done, "American Psycho" is a great Misfits album and a proud addition to any TRUE Fiends' collection!

It's too bad there is so much dissension among Fiends over various band members. Misfits albums have been amazingly entertaining over the years no matter who was involved. American Psycho is fantastic and extremely fun. Acquire it now, have a Fiendish time, and make sure you let the disc play all the way through.

Learn to live without Danzig,

When I bought this album, it was my first real Misfits experience. I had only heard them once before, and at the time, I had dismissed them as being "too metal" and not enough punk. But they are simply an acquired taste. To really "get" the Misfits, you have to understand what they are about. In simple terms, they are a punk band that writes songs about monsters, aliens, and the like. Another thing you must understand is that they (as a band) have lead two separate and inherently different lives. First, there was the Danzig era. Glenn Danzig, being their original front man and chief songwriter, helped gain them notoriety and a cult following which still exists today. After a few years and several albums, the group disbanded. Then, in the mid 90's, their bassist (Jerry Only) felt it was time to resurrect the band. By this time, Danzig was deeply immersed in a goth-metal career and had no desire to return. It is also said that he did not want to give up the rights to the Misfit's name and all of their old songs, so he fought the reformation, but lost. A new singer was found (Michale Graves), and this album was what resulted. People fail to recognize the genius of American Psycho, simply because it doesn't include Danzig. This fact has, in recent years, become an obsession of old-school Misfits fans. They choose to hate the band and everything they put out JUST BECAUSE of Danzig's absence. I will say that their old stuff was AWESOME, but this still infuriates me!! In order to function as a band, you must constantly change, grow, and become able to work with new ideas. Yes, this music is different than that of yesteryear, and NO, Graves is not the same as Danzig. But just think about what the Misfits might be like today if they had kept the original line-up, and sounded just like they did in 1982. Seriously, how many times could you rewrite and recycle classics such as We are 138 and Teenagers from Mars? Jerry Only and Doyle have done a wonderful job keeping this band alive, and making the songs of new just as good (if not better) than the songs of old. American Psycho is a great album, I enjoy it every time I listen to it, and I hope the Misfits stay in the "horror business". As for those of you still stuck in the shadow of Glenn Danzig-buy this album and find out what you're missing.

Better Late than Never,

I'm a metal/thrash/punk (DRI, Suicidal, Slayer, etc.) fan from way back and, of course, a Misfits fan from the Glenn Danzig era. When this originally came out, I just wasn't interested in it. It wasn't out of any snobby allegiance to Glenn or due to 'purist' reasons - I just was not interested.I had gotten a credit via a promotion at Amazon MP3 and bought some Misfit MP3s. Soon after, the song "Walk Among Us" came up in my "MP3 Recommendations" page at Amazon. I didn't notice the album name - I thought I had stumbled upon an obscure, unreleased track from early Misfits. I listened to the sample and the first thing I noticed was that the production level was beyond anything from the Danzig era - it was terrific. The second thing was that the song was just a non-stop musical blitz... a sonic blitzkrieg. Only then did I notice the album name and realized that this was post-Danzig. I was intrigued enough to plunk down my $0.99 and download the song. Wow! The song nails it. From the "Whoa oh" to the crunchy guitar and the less than 90 second length - the song (to me) was everything I would expect from a modern-day Misfits incarnation. I found myself listening to the song repeatedly in the car. The 90 seconds was long enough to leave me wanting more. I downloaded the entire album not long after. I'm glad I did. I liken this album to DRI's "Crossover" or Suicidal's "Join the Army" when those bands went from punk to metalcore. Being close to Halloween and just plain enjoying this album, I've listened to "American Psycho" many times recently on my commute to-and-from work. I'm kicking myself for not getting "American Psycho" back in '97 when it first came out. The album is solid from first to last. Looking at the YouTube vids, it looked like a great show on the supporting tour. Oh, well - I'm enjoying it now anyway. Better late than never.

I never get tired of this cd,

Now, while I am a HUGE danzig fan, as well as Samhain and "old Misfits". "American Psycho" is without a doubt my favorite Misfits cd, everyone can say "oh it sucks, because glen is not on it", who cares, Danzig has Danzig now and the Misfits are carrying on without him, (not so much right now, but you know what I mean).I was a little reluctant to pick this cd up when I saw the back and it said Micheal Graves on vocals, I said "this aint glen danzig", but I bought it anyway and I loved it as soon as it started. the production is great. its got a lot of power, and the songs are catchy as hell. and Micheal graves is a awesome singer, he's not a danzig wannabe, he has his own voice and it fits well with the misfits, "dig up her bones" is one of my favorite songs of all time. "Speak of the devil" rocks. "Blacklight" and "ressurection" are awesome, "Hate the living, love the dead" is demented and one of my favorites. All the songs are great. I think my least favorite is "Day of the Dead" but thats still a cool song. In my oppinion, this was when the band was in its prime. sure "static age" and "walk among us" are untouchable, this is my favorite. people need to look past the whole danzig thing and just listen to the music. Most people hate before they hear it. This is one cd I could not live without. I highly recomend this cd to anyone, especially the haters, besides anyone who has seen this band in concert would know that danzig doesn't make the band, DOYLE makes the band,(in my oppinion), BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!

One of punk's better reunion efforts,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Psycho (Audio CD)
Throughout the 90s veterens of 70s punk regrouped to record reunion albums. Most of them were weak and forgetible. The 'Fits "Psycho", along with the Damned's "Not of This Earth" and the Buzzcocks' "Trade Test Transmission", were the exceptions. Although Danzig had gone on to blacker pastures (and they couldn't get the Damned's Dave Vanian) the Misfits sucessfully combine late 80s speed metal with their 78-82 sound. Best songs: "Mars attacks", "dig up her bones" and "hellnight" (a hidden track).

Dead Kings Rise,
By J. Rose "jrccw" (Greenwood, MS USA) - See all my reviews

This album, the first of the 'Fits' resurrection, was a landmark in their development. NO, it's NOT Danzig, but that's hardly the point. This album has a brand new singer with much more vocal range AND the ability to sound like Danzig when necessary, better recording (WALK AMONG US is a great head-rush, but could have been even better with some better recording) and one of hardcore's best drummers. It brings out all that was fun about the 'Fits without wallowing in the gore and muck (as Danzig is wont to do in some of his lyrics), and sends the band in a not-that-new direction. Kudos to the 'Fits, and welcome back, guys. We really missed ya.

i grew up with real misfits. so now you know where this is going. they didnt sell out? yes, they did. its just as good? no its not. there is some catchy stuff here, but this is not the misfits of old. they will never be what the misfits of old were. never. young people, you missed out- go buy some vinyl (gasp) and listen to the old misfits stuff if you wanna know why this band even had a chance. they are two bands you know- danzig, whoever.. it could have been something else, but is not. they will never be what the misfits were. never.

Not The Misfits best,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Psycho (Audio CD)
I hate to sound repetitive, but the new Misfits just arent even close to what the old Misfits used to be. The new Misfts arent auful but they arent in my interest without Danzig, he is the best punk singer to ever live. He definatly reminds me of Morrison. Anyways if you want to here the origonal Misfits at there best definalty get "Static Age" or "Walk Among Us".
