5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Influential, January 29, 2012

This review is from: American Quilt Collections: Antique Quilt Masterpieces (Hardcover)
This book is the first quilt book I ever owned, and it was highly influential in my journey as a quilt collector.

I bought my first antique quilt from Shelly Zegart in 1989, and had the good fortune of visiting her home in Louisville in 2001, just after 9/11. At the time, Shelly was organizing an exhibit in the Durst buildings in Manhattan, and I was lending two of my New York Beauty quilts. We sat in her front parlor talking for hours, and finally I asked if she had any quilts I could see. She led me upstairs, pulled out a box from under the guest room bed, and inside was the quilt accompanying the Sandra Mitchell collection in the book. It was the most remarkable quilt I'd ever seen, densely quilted, and in excellent condition. Shelly handed me a copy of the book before I left that day. Five years later, I bought the Sandra Mitchell Album quilt, and three years later I had identified the maker, along with an almost identical quilt made by the daughter. Shelly and I have remained in contact over the years, and I loaned her a silk log cabin quilt for one of the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festivals a few years back. More recently, we have corresponded about "Why Quilts Matter" - the 9-part documentary series about quilts that has aired on PBS stations around the country and is available on DVD. I made a contribution to help fund the production, and a couple of my quilts appear in the series. Now, I am doing guest blogs for the "Why Quilts Matter" web site, and discussing other projects with Shelly. We'll see each other in October, 2012 at the American Quilt Study Group Seminar in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Never did I imagine that one book would be so influential, but it was. It's because Shelly is influential. She's a pioneer. I highly recommend this excellent book to anyone with an interest in quilts, antiques, art, and collecting. Selfishly, I hope Shelly will do a second edition.
