This is really a great set and I spent nearly a week listening and watching.
Steven I. Ramm
The most recent release from the Woody Guthrie archives, lots of his music, but also lots of him talking about his life and his insights into various topics.
L. Herman
Wonderful interviews with Woody, great pictures, an amazing collection of recordings and a vinyl record too.
S. Whitehouse

On October 22 Rounder released this box set titled "Woody Guthrie - American Radical" which should serve as a companion set to the wonderful Grammy -nominated "Woody@100" box from Smithsonian Folkways last year (see my review of that set on Amazon). The sets are different however because of the production run and the variety of the physical contents. The S/F box contained four CDs of released material plus a few radio shows as well as a 12x12 book. I don't know what the production run was but it was high and sold lots of copies.

The Rounder set is limited to just 5,000 copies and contains practically all previously unissued material. There are six CDs. The first four contain the complete Library of Congress Recordings made by Alan Lomax. Unlike the Jelly Roll Morton LoC recordings that Rounder released years ago, Guthrie brings his guitar, rather than the piano, and he doesn't tap his foot while playing - which is what Morton did and it's often difficult to listen to the JRM recordings because of that. Woody is engaging and tells some great stories I've never heard. CDs 5 and 6 include the BPA recordings as well as War Effort songs from radio transcriptions. He even appeared on two programs titled "Jazz in America". This is followed by a group of "demos" Woody made on the subject of venereal disease and finally a radio drama titled "The Lonesome Traveler". But there is more to the set. There is a wonderful 60-minute DVD of the documentary "Roll On Columbia" about Woody being hired to create songs for the Bonneville Dam Project . The film was made at the University of Oregon in 2002. The set includes a 60page booklet written by Rounder co-founder Bill Nowlin. This is a condensed version of the 258-page book which is available as a full length PDF on one of the CDs.

The most recent release from the Woody Guthrie archives, lots of his music, but also lots of him talking about his life and his insights into various topics. A "must" acquisition for those interested in the history of folk music, and his influence in the musical traditions of our country.

The item pictured here is NOT American Radical Patriot which is a 6 CD + DVD of Woody's Library of Congress recordings including interviews with Alan Lomax. The item pictured in this listing is My Dusty Road which is a collection of studio recordings. If you order this item, I'm not sure what they will send you. American Radical Patriot is a great recording if they send you the right thing. Very well done liner notes

The times and period of our country went through the depression and the dust bowl, we needed Woody Guthrie to bring forth into music as a storyteller, as sign of times.
