Book Description

August 1999
This complete and authoritative history of the railroad industry in the United States is richly illustrated with archival black-and-white material, as well as current and period color photography, maps, timetables, promotional materials and other memorabilia. Like its predecessor the MBI title Classic American Railroads (1996), The American Railroad focuses on the greatest railroads in U.S. history, but also includes lesser-known operations representing all eras of the American railroad, from the mid-19th century to tile present. Published in a handsome hardbound coffee-table format, the sweeping scope of The American Railroad is sure to appeal to general readers and die-hard enthusiasts alike.

This book is an excellent source for railroad history background. As a student, I ordered this book for a research paper on the American Railroad. I found this book well worth the money. It is well written and very informative. The author keeps your interest with many colorful photos throughout the book. A pleasure to read whether for pleasure or research.
