American Rest
George Flynn
For mixed piano quartet
Larry Combs, clarinet; Keith Conant, viola;
Christopher Costanza, cello; Stuart Leitch, piano

The Southport Composers Series exists to document the new music of living composers. Composer, pianist and educator George Flynn offers his newly recorded chamber composition, “American Rest.” The mixed piano quartet composition is a meditation on the American experience in Vietnam. The 61 minute, single movement creation paints a social mirror of a time that tore into the musical and social fabric of the world order.

George Flynn (b. 1937) was raised in Montana and Washington. As a pianist/composer Flynn has promoted new music around the world. From 1977-2001 Flynn chaired Music Composition at DePaul University’s School of Music, Chicago.

Originally composed in 1975, a year of defeat for the United States and its war with Vietnam, “American Rest” was revised in 1982 and 1984. The set of nocturnes for piano solo “Pieces Of Night,” (S-SSD 0095) was spawned from “American Rest.”

The ethereal yet intense mood of “American Rest” seems to hint of a new peace after the futility of war. The harmonic center to the creation tears at various forms of minimal and sometimes majestic clusters. Of special note is the tone and intensity of Larry Combs, the Principal Clarinet of The Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Southport Records and The Southport Composers Series sees the need for living composers to not only produce and notate their compositions, but to present them to the world via Compact Disc. Media, we appreciate your time and support!
