Excellent explanations of various aspects of the American Revolution, October 5, 2007
This review is from: American Revolution: The Journey Toward Independence (Voices of American History a New Way to Bring History to Life) (Paperback)
I learned quite a bit going thorugh this book with my son. The songs are very well done, much like a choir concert, words and music are of excellent quality. Song lyrics are typed out in the book and they are quite well annunciated so you really hear the lyrics clearly.
Each section is structured by starting with back ground music and a narrator explaining an aspect of the war, such as "The Battles Begin." Then within the narration a different voice narrates an applicable quote from relevant people, such as in the "The Battles Begin" Patrick Henry is heard giving the famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. Then the narrator comes back and finishes the narration/explanation. Then there is a song relevant to the narration. In "The Battles Begin" the song is entitled "The Song of the Minutemen."
The subjects dealt with are unique and provide a perspective that is often not heard, such as the perspective of the British, and how women were not only torn apart by the men going to war and how they helped with the war effort, but also how they too were asking for freedom and the right to vote.
The subjects covered are: taxation without representation, the English perspective, (I really enjoyed this, as this is not really a perspective we hear a lot in the U.S.) the Boston Tea Party, Continental Congress, battles begin, Declaration of Independence, the war in the Northern Colonies, The war in the Southern Colonies, the strength of the British Navy vs. the Yankee privateers, women and the war supporting the cause and lacking the men at home to help, and losing sons and husbands, the growing support of Americans in support of independence (many were Loyalists at the beginning of the war), American victory, and Independence.
This provides an interested student with a firm grip on the American Revolution. I personally used it for homeschool use, and I found it an excellent suppliment to our American Revolution studies.
