While the American Revolution is often associated with New England and names like Boston, Concord, and Lexington, the Southern Colonies and names like Kings Mountain, Cowpens, and Charleston were also crucial to the war that established the United States of America. This analysis of the role of the Southern Colonies in the Revolution covers the origin of these five colonies--Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia--and their participation in the cause of American independence. Crucial Southern battles, from the coast to the mountains, are examined in detail, with attention to the larger context of the war and its significance, as well as to the role of the ordinary Southerner, both patriot and Tory.

"Southerners saw themselves during this period as a distinctive people...Britain's 'souther stratege' evolved in part from that assumption, and, ultimately, military engagements in the lower states decided the war's outcome" --The North Carolina Historical Review.

More About the Author

Biography of David Lee Russell

Born: Wilmington, North Carolina

David Lee Russell is the author of three history books on the American Revolution as it unfolded in the South. This focus on the South was approached out of observation that most books covering that period of American History centered on the events in New England and Middle Atlantic colonies.

David's interest in history was always there throughout his life, but having been influenced by an R&D engineer father, he earned a B.S. Degree in Aerospace Engineering from N. C. State University. David then attended Naval Aviation Officer's Candidate School in Pensacola and was commissioned as Ensign-Special Duty Intelligence. He then served as an Air/ASW Intelligence Officer in Southeast Asia and Indian Ocean for Patrol Squadron Four.
After his military service, David started his long career in Information Technology Management in support of various Fortune 500 corporations.

David resides in Milton, Georgia and continues his writing projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best history of the Revolution in the South, February 2, 2005
By
slammy (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
I ran across this book in my local library. As an avid history buff, I've always felt my knowledge of the Revolution was lacking. Many books on the revolution end up mired in confusing details. This book by David Russell is probably the best history book I have ever read. He begins by giving a background of the colonies from their origins through the beginning of the war. Russell is good at giving all the important details and backgrounds of the characters without becoming bogged down in too much detail. The book is very well organized by campaigns and I felt that I had an excellent understanding of the war in the south when I finished. Sharp, concise background information on the the leaders and their motives. Almost every small skirmish is covered, as well as the main battles. Where available he gives casualties on each side as well as the result of the battle on the moral of the inhabitants in the area, whose support was crucial to both sides. Most civilians were torn between King and colony and were forced to make a choice. The Patriots who fought for our country risked everything they had, a fact that is mostly forgotten today. Many thanks to Russell whose great writing skills kept me up many a night with a book I just couldn't put down.
