There are two main things that I didn't like about the set. One is that a couple of the drawers are hard to remove from the box. Since it is a hand made box I can be kind of forgiving on that, they do come out but they get stuck and have to be monkeyed with to get them to come out. A little sandpaper may take care of that but it should have been done before it was shipped to me. Secondly, the rule book that they include is almost worthless so if you are planning on buying this for someone who doesn't already know how to play, or more importantly score, Mahjong then I would suggest buying a separate rulebook to go along with this set.
Overall I like the set and look forward to using it for a long time to come.
This set was ordered during the Christmas mailing melee on 19 Dec and arrived on 22 Dec (as expected). The Amazon product description, when we opened the set, proved to be entirely accurate. Moreover, all tiles were in vacuum-sealed plastic wrappers and showed no sign of mildew. The drawers are not a tight fit and slide in and out easily - I can see that the glue might be a problem later on, but I'll report on that in 6 months. The absence of racks in the set isn't a problem as the tiles stand up easily on a flat surface. If you want to play on a carpet then racks are probably necessary, but you can get those for under $20 on Amazon. The product could probably be carried to a friend's house for a game, but it's not intended to be a travel set; it's designed more as a piece of furniture, and that's where ours is now: sitting in the dining room. I should add, finally, that the instructions (for the American version of the game) have been written by someone who is actually a native English speaker. In other words, they make sense!
One of the drawers on the set came unglued and falls apart easily, but other than that, I have no complaints. The set is beautiful and it's getting a lot of use besides decorating my house. I can see my family enjoying this game for years to come.
