Product Description

A fine mahjong set brings elegance and color to a room even when it's not being played, and this set is one of the finest we've seen. With five sliding drawers in a richly colored rosewood block inlaid with shell decorations of birds in flight, this set will delight your friends and brighten your home. This set is a reproduction of the classic sets from Shanghai that first sparked mahjong's popularity in the West in the 1920's. The tiles are made from crisp new bamboo and cattle bone, inscribed with fabulously colored designs. Please note that this is a hand made mahjong set made with natural materials using traditional methods. Each tile is cut and carved one piece a time, and the characters are inked by hand. Hand cut bone and bamboo tiles are slightly smaller than fiberglass mahjong tiles, and coloring and shape varies slightly from tile to tile and set to set.

This is a beautiful set, the display box looks fantastic and seems to be pretty solidly built. The pieces themselves are individually crafted from cow bone and bamboo (the Yellow Mountain Imports website has more details about the process) that are fitted together with a dovetail slot and hand painted. The pieces are a good thickness and easy to use and stand up on their own. Because they are hand carved and painted there are minor imperfections on some of the pieces but they don't detract from the set or the usability. A couple of the pieces had a small splinters on the bamboo back that were easily removed. This set is nice for US players or those that are unfamiliar with Mahjong because it also includes the Arabic numerals on the pieces along with the Chinese characters. It has 8 jokers and two sets of flowers and seasons along with the standard Mahjong tiles so it can be used to play any rule-set or variation that you want. About the only things that are missing from this set are tile racks which are a nice option to have and while it has one set of tokens for the winds to keep track of who is which wind it doesn't have an indicator for what the wind of the round is.

There are two main things that I didn't like about the set. One is that a couple of the drawers are hard to remove from the box. Since it is a hand made box I can be kind of forgiving on that, they do come out but they get stuck and have to be monkeyed with to get them to come out. A little sandpaper may take care of that but it should have been done before it was shipped to me. Secondly, the rule book that they include is almost worthless so if you are planning on buying this for someone who doesn't already know how to play, or more importantly score, Mahjong then I would suggest buying a separate rulebook to go along with this set.

Overall I like the set and look forward to using it for a long time to come.

This was bought as a present for my wife. We've owned a plastic set before (which are functional, durable and the pictures attractive) but we lost it during our last house move. I researched a number of replacement sets, including the item (also via Yellow Mountain at Amazon) at http://www.amazon.com/American-Western-Bone-Bamboo-Mahjong/dp/B001C1WAPY/ref=sr_1_16?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1293386853&sr=1-16 . This product was also bamboo and bone, as is this this set, but included tile racks as well as counters, and it was cheaper. Some others also include pushers - heaven knows why, I thought that was what my arms and hands were for! But the cheaper item had a couple of complaints about mildewed tiles while this set (and similar) mentioned drawers that stuck and that needed re-gluing.

This set was ordered during the Christmas mailing melee on 19 Dec and arrived on 22 Dec (as expected). The Amazon product description, when we opened the set, proved to be entirely accurate. Moreover, all tiles were in vacuum-sealed plastic wrappers and showed no sign of mildew. The drawers are not a tight fit and slide in and out easily - I can see that the glue might be a problem later on, but I'll report on that in 6 months. The absence of racks in the set isn't a problem as the tiles stand up easily on a flat surface. If you want to play on a carpet then racks are probably necessary, but you can get those for under $20 on Amazon. The product could probably be carried to a friend's house for a game, but it's not intended to be a travel set; it's designed more as a piece of furniture, and that's where ours is now: sitting in the dining room. I should add, finally, that the instructions (for the American version of the game) have been written by someone who is actually a native English speaker. In other words, they make sense!

I personally love playing Mahjong and have been wanting my own set for quite some time. When I got my set, my 2 year old daughter wanted to play it and I thought, 'well, she won't know how to play it and I don't think I could teach her', but, she's one of the best Mahjong players I have every seen (though I haven't seen many), she loves playing it and we play it daily.
One of the drawers on the set came unglued and falls apart easily, but other than that, I have no complaints. The set is beautiful and it's getting a lot of use besides decorating my house. I can see my family enjoying this game for years to come.
