Great Advice - Arrogant Attitude,
By "vincentpa" (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Roughshooting (Hardcover)
This would be a five star book had the author not given his "my way or the highway" opinions throughout. I learned much from it. He writes concisely and clearly, and provides good tips. I only wish the photos were color. If you can get through Roggenkamp's opinions (even if one agrees, there is an air of arrogance), this is a great book. I have used it for reference in choosing a dog. I have also used it for reference in general hunting.

waste of time,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Roughshooting (Hardcover)
This book is a slapped together rehash of how-to books on wingshooting. Two or three sections are unedited transcripts of interviews the author conducted with acknowledged experts. They may be experts but it sure makes for painful reading. Mr. Roggenkamp has a great enthusiasm for wingshooting that does come across. I liked his advice to hunt with the best gun you have - don't leave it in the cabinet and that a day in the field is more than a full limit. He seems like a nice guy but he is not a writer and this is not much of a book.

WESTERN ROUGHSHOOTER,
By BILL KENNY (BREA CALIFORNIA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Roughshooting (Hardcover)
FINALLY, A BOOK NOT ONLY ABOUT THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF ROUGHSHOOTING, BUT ABOUT THE LIFESTYLE OF THE AMERICAN UPLAND BIRD HUNTER. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE BOOKS THAT I KEEP READING OVER AGAIN.THIS BOOK DELVES INTO WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT: DOGS, GUNS, BIRDS , AND THE STYLE IN WHICH ONE PURSUES THEM. IN PARTICULAR, IM GLAD TO SEE A BOOK ON UPLAND HUNTING THAT DOESN'T STATE "THE 16 GAUGE IS OBSULETE". MY ONLY CRITICAL ADVICE IS THAT HE OVERLOOKED THE WESTERN ROUGHSHOOTING (CALIFORNIA QUAIL, DOVE, CHUKER) THAT I ENJOY.IM WAITING FOR MR ROGGENCAMPS FOLLOW UP.

A refreshing look at the subject and the spirit !,
This review is from: American Roughshooting (Hardcover)
A friend of mine lent me his review copy. As an editor of a major outdoor magazine he wanted to know if his exuberance about the book was as well placed as it should be. He wanted other bird hunters to share their opinions with him. In my opinion it is a book that you will want to leave within easy reach of your favorite reading chair. The book is not only a blueprint on how to hunt but far more important a blueprint on how to enjoy the hunt. It is a fine series of shoppes if you will, specializing in dog's, gun's, friend's, fun, international opinion, food and drink and much more. I never met the Author but know and share his passions. It's a great book and I am ordering copies for my bird hunting buddies for Christmas! There is some great writing in this book but the authors essay on hunting alone is worth the list price alone! The book has the spirit of bird hunting captured completely.
