4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading, especially for Methodists, June 24, 2010

This review is from: American Saint: Francis Asbury and the Methodists (Hardcover)
It is amazing to think that there had been no biographies of Francis Asbury written for decades before this book. Probably none had been written that really employ the disciplines of modern historical scholarship. This biography is exceptionally well done.

The book humanizes Asbury in an appropriate way, shows his foibles, but also the courage and strength of his leadership in a pivotal and stressful time for American Methodism. He was, frankly, an amazing person and the dramatic growth of American Methodism during the time of his leadership is a credit to the persistence of his vision.

My favorite story in the book is about how Asbury came to have his assistant have his horse ready at the side door during annual conferences so he could jump on it and ride as soon as he had read the appointments.

I gave my copy of this book to my bishop, so I'll have to buy another. I hope every United Methodist bishop reads it. At least one layperson in my congregation also read it and found it fascinating.
