Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This entry in the Collective Biographies series contains profiles of 10 noted genre writers: Heinlein, Asimov, Pohl, Bradbury, Herbert, Anderson, Norton, L'Engle, Le Guin, and Butler. Each 10-page chapter traces a writer's life, briefly describes particular books, tells what awards have been won, and provides black-and-white photos of the subject. Though somewhat pedestrian in style, the brief biographies offer grist for report writers and can serve as an introduction to some of the greats in the field. Chapter notes; further reading; Internet addresses; bibliography. Sally Estes

More About the Author

I wear many colorful hats--nature lover, conservationist, world traveler, writer, author, educator, lover of life. Born in South Africa, I immigrated to the US having lived in California, Minnesota, Alabama and Canada. I am a mother, grandmother and wife, and my family is the core of my life. All that I see, feel, experience feeds and inspires my writing. What I have learned in college and through wide reading informs my writing. I earned MA degrees in education of the gifted and talented, and in public history. The series of YA Eco mysteries for 4-8 graders, The Adventures of The Sizzling Six, reflects my passion and awe for the natural world. With the trusty aid of Boris Datnow, my technological guru, the third book in the series uses QR codes to transport readers from the printed word on the page to video clips that let readers see and hear what the characters in the story are seeing and hearing! My memoir, Behind the Walled Garden of Apartheid, drew inspiration from a beautiful country scared by the iniquities of apartheid. The Final Diagnosis: What The Autopsy Reveals About Life and Death is a tribute to my husband, an autopsy pathologist. My historical novel, The Nine Inheritors, pays homage to my grandmother and two aunts and all those killed in the Holocaust. What's next? On my upcoming trip to Australia and New Zealand, I hope to find inspiration for my eco mysteries among the unique wildlife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating biographies of science fiction writers., June 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: American Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers (Collective Biographies) (Library Binding)
Wow. Finally, a book about science fiction that focuses on its writers, not just their works. Included here are short (about a dozen page-long) biographies of science fiction writers, including information about their lives, their works, and finally where to find more information about them. Included here are Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Frank Herbert, and more. Some big names in science fiction seemed to have been left out, which is a shame (where is Clark?). But still, those ten biographies here are a great way to learn more about the literature of science fiction. Since the reading level is pretty easy, this is a good book for youngsters, too, who are just beginning to explore the field. I think this book will work very well for nine or ten year olds, and serve to spark their interest in science fiction, and in reading in general. A perfect Christmas gift :).
