Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up–This book opens with a six-page overview of American accomplishments in various fields of science, followed by alphabetical entries on the scientists. Each of the nearly 300 articles begins with the individual's name, important dates, and specialty, and an introductory paragraph highlighting the significance of the work. Personal information (marriages, children, education, etc.) and career details are also noted. Further-reading suggestions are offered for each entry and include print and online sources. There is an alphabetical list of entries and another by discipline; the index is extensive. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs appear throughout. This volume will work for students looking for quick facts or as a starting point for research papers.–John Palmer, Bryan & College Station Library System, Bryan, TX

From Booklist

Written in an easy-to-understand manner by a professor of history at Virginia Polytechnic Institute,American Scientists provides nearly 300 entries on influential scientists in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics, botany, geology and geophysics, medicine and physiology, chemistry, and physics. Each entry includes a page or two of text covering the scientist's background, including details about the person's professional career and accomplishments within the scientific world and concluding with a short list of citations for further reading. Also included are some black-and-white photographs, a short bibliography, a list of the entries by scientific discipline, a list of the entrants by date of birth, and an extensive index. The author doesn't explain how he chose the persons included, but among those profiled are Rachel Carson, George Washington Carver, Edwin Hubble, Linus Pauling, and James Van Allen.

Information on many of the scientists included here is easy to find. But most other works on scientists are international in scope, and some are narrowly focused on women scientists or scientists in specific disciplines. American Scientists is recommended for high-school and public libraries as well as undergraduate collections in need of basic biographical information on American scientists. Diana Shonrock

This review is from: American Scientists (American Biographies) (Hardcover)
The latest title in the outstanding Facts on File 'American Scientists' series is "American Scientists" which is a compendium of biographical profiles of the men and women in every scientific discipline who are acknowledged contributors to their respective fields of study. Organized alphabetically for ease of use as a general reference, almost 300 entries highlight the lives and contributions of scientists who have significantly impacted society in general and the scientific community in particular. Enhanced with 74 photographs, cross-references, an extensive bibliography, a general index, and two subject indexes (one by discipline and one by year of birth) the scientists range from Rachel Carson, to Edwin Hubble, to Linus Pauling, to Werner von Braun. Every school and community library should acquire and have available for their students and patrons and copy of "American Scientists" from Facts on File in either the Science History or Bibliography reference collections..
