About the Book: The story begins with the closing months of the Civil War and portrays the role played by a group of Coal Miner Soldiers from the hills of Pennsylvania in bringing the war to an end. It then develops the living and working conditions in the coal mining area, the lives and character of the enterprising individuals who in reality controlled most business activity in the country at the time - the Robber Barons. The interaction between these two groups where the power was overwhelmingly in the hands of the business men is described. And, the eventual triumph of the under-dog coal miner is detailed in the drama of physical conflict, coal mine catastrophe, community reaction involving women and children and the timely intervention of the government in the form of President Teddy Roosevelt.
It is the story of American Serfs and Their Fight for Freedom.
