Book Description

May 2001
About the Book: The story begins with the closing months of the Civil War and portrays the role played by a group of Coal Miner Soldiers from the hills of Pennsylvania in bringing the war to an end. It then develops the living and working conditions in the coal mining area, the lives and character of the enterprising individuals who in reality controlled most business activity in the country at the time - the Robber Barons. The interaction between these two groups where the power was overwhelmingly in the hands of the business men is described. And, the eventual triumph of the under-dog coal miner is detailed in the drama of physical conflict, coal mine catastrophe, community reaction involving women and children and the timely intervention of the government in the form of President Teddy Roosevelt.

It is the story of American Serfs and Their Fight for Freedom.

About the Author

About the Author: John J. Fendrock is an American History buff and finds the period at the beginning of the twentieth century most fascinating. There are a number of similarities with the start of the twenty first century: the accumulation of enormous wealth by individual entrepreneurs; expansion of new industries; an unease by a large segment of the population that with all of the prosperity many are falling behind; exploitation of many in the lower economic/social scale. But overall, great optimism with nagging doubts. That the events described took place in the area where he was born and grew up makes the story more personal. Mr. Fendrock has had three books published, all relating to management and business, as well as a number of articles on the same subjects. This is his first excursion into the world of fiction.
