A detailed chronology, new to this edition, focuses on black women's contributions, starting with poet Lucy Terry in 1746. Two other elements unique to this edition are a biobibliography of Dorothy Porter Wesley, the founder of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University, and an essay that reviews the achievements of choral director Eva Jessye. Following a list of reference books, the bibliography is divided into literature, social sciences, audiovisual materials, and performing arts. These sections are subdivided; for example, literature is divided into books for young readers, biographies, novels, plays, criticism, etc. Within these sections, materials are listed by author. There are no annotations.
Added to this edition is a separate section focusing on West Coast black women, which is organized in the same way as the main part of the book. Useful resource lists are provided of black women music directors and college presidents, black serials and publishers, and black research centers; also included are brief biographies of important black women. There are photographs of artists and their art and an index of personal names, which is useful because of the book's complicated arrangement and lack of running heads.
There are a few major omissions, such as Smith's Notable Black American Women, but this will be a useful addition to all academic collections, especially those supporting African American and women's studies. It will also be of value to high schools and large public libraries.
