Hirahara's bio of George Aratani is a smooth narrative that provides a rare window into the life of this influencial citizen. Aratani not only was a powerful entrepreneur, but part of a renewed force of community amongst Japanese Americans. While Aratani is the focal point of this book, Hirahara does much to relate a broader timeline - pictures of Guadalupe, CA in the days when farming reigned, when Japanese, Mexicans, and European Americans worked shoulder to shoulder; the internment camps of the 40's and the discrimination that arose in a post-WWII nation; and the rebuilding of the Japanese American society in the United States. American Son should be heralded for its insight and honesty, and for revealing the strength in the figure of Aratani. |
