Beautiful rendition of American songs with a super Portugese voice.
Love this recording of a great Fado legend.
Highly recommend this CD.

This artist, Amalia Rodrigues is not to be mixed in with the long list of Brazilian singers. Amalia sings in the "mother tongue" of Portugal. It's tender, elegant, and immensely subtle in it's nuances. The Portuguese language is not pronounced the same all over the world. Brazil has it's pronunciation, and Portugal another. This album harks back to something very pure and profound. When she sings in English, it is charming. This is a jewel in a jewel case.

I am a longtime fan of Amalia, I own a lot of her records,CDs and DVDs.However: I don`t understand any portuguese language, I`m totally hooked at Amalia`s voice.
Although mostly known as "the absolute diva of Portuguese FADO music , she has also recorded Spanish and Italian songs, which I do not like as much as her fado renditions.But that`s personal . This American songbook album CD , however, I simply looooove.
Amalia obviously had a love-relation with New York and America that one is able to hear in these songs .This CD is really one of my favourite Amalia recordings !

For one who knows Amalia Rodrigues' Fados, this record is quite a surprise. I definitely prefer her voice on the fados, but it was very interesting to hear her in a register of american songs. I would recommend the record to anyone interested to know every aspects of her talents, but not to someone who likes to listen to "classic" american songs.
