Editorial Reviews

In the Style of Tennesse Williams, this Award Winning drama stars Oscar Nominee Terry Moore. American Southern won Best Director at AngelCiti 2001 in Los Angeles and produced Sundance Winning Cinematographer Enrique Chediak. Great comedy from Becky Fly. Clay and Ethan are terrific with their attraction for each other. Great scene between the two men in the guesthouse. As the plotting character sister Sister says, while chugging her Jack Daniels in her mink coat: "Boys will be boys". Based on the Award Winning Yale Repertory Script.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Tennessee William's style-beautiful, over the top film, July 19, 2005

This review is from: American Southern (DVD)
I first saw "American Southern" in Cannes and was floored by how beautiful it was. (The cinematographer, Enrique Chediak, went on to win at Sundance and start his career from this film). It's in the classic Tennessee William's style; you expect Vivien Leigh or Elizabeth Tayler to come out any minute. One of the leads, Sister, wears a mink coat in the middle of a hot summer and drinks Jack Daniels all day long saying quotes like, "I don't do poor well", "Money is never gauche, only not having it is," and "I've lived so long with pain that I don't know how to live without it". People were quoting these after the film like Bette Davis' "Fasten your seat belts" comment in "All About Eve". The comic pair, Cola and Ducie are hilarious. It's also a period piece and all the details are perfect. Oscar nominee Terry Moore plays the matriarch. Its wordy, you can tell it was a play at Yale first. It also has a hot subplot between the two characters Ethan and Clay. You can decide for yourself if they are gay. If you like the 40's melodramas that are a little bigger than life, you'll probably like this one. I think it might end up a small classic with time.
