This is an exquisite impressive book like all those amazing books published by Acanthus Press.
I haven't got the chance to own the first edition and when I knew about this revised one I knew I had to have it.
The book is more like a piece of art, wonderfully executed. It documents 37 of Trumbauer's exceptional properties scattered around Pennsylvania, New Port, New York among other states.
Each property is illustrated with glorious archival photos and some of them have stunning new shots revealing their contemporary status and showing Trumbauer's immaculate architectural mastery in a new light. Also, each property is accompanied with clear floor plans.
The text is detailed and highly informative, it is also accessible to specialist and casual readers alike.
This is a highly recommended book for all those interested in fine architecture as it is the most comprehensive account on Horace Trumbauer that is both highly informative and lavishly illustrated.

As an owner of the fine original edition of Michael Kathrens's AMERICAN SPLENDOR: THE RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE OF HORACE TRUMBAUER, when I first learned that a revised edition of this book was in the planning stages, I wondered if such would prove to be entirely necessary.

The answer turns out to be a resounding and overwhelming YES!

Replete with a host of wonderful new color photographs, a thoughtfully revised and expanded text and produced with a care and expertise rarely encountered in works of this kind, the revised edition of AMERICAN SPLENDOR is quite simply one of the finest and most beautiful books I have ever encountered. A remarkable achievement in this age of skimping and shrinkage, AMERICAN SPLENDOR approaches the status of a work of art.

With his earlier work, author Kathrens dispelled a web of malicious myth and falsehood which had obscured the prodigious design achievements of Horace Trumbauer to introduce him to many of us who were largely unfamiliar with his work. With this
revised edition of of the book, Mr. Kathrens firmly establishes Trumbauer's place in the Pantheon of Great American Architects.

Superb - waited for this second edition for a long time and was not disappointed. Fans of Beaux Arts architecture and Horace Trumbauer will not be disappointed with this re-introduction of a comprehensive and informative examination of the work of Trumbauer. The new houses complete what is a detailed and in-depth review of this talented architect.

I want to thank Michael Kathren for this beautiful book. Horace Trumbauer was my great Uncle. I have always heard stories of his designing of the Philadelphia Art Museum. I grew up in the Philadelphia area. As a child we would drive by a home sometimes on the Main Line and my father would say, "Your great Uncle Horace built that house." That is all I knew until this book. How thrilling to find out about ALL his work and wonderful historic homes he designed. I now know where my life long interest in architecture comes from. This is a wonderful book, many thanks to the author.

What a wonderful sight seeing Claradon Court on the slipcover of this excellent book. It brings back so many memories of my childhood in Newport and the spectacular houses which line Bellevue Avenue. Even 40 years ago there were still remnants of the society which built these great houses.

Michael Kathrens is to be commended on all his books, but this one is special. While they all tell the story of each house and their owners, this is the only one dedicated to a single architect (and his office). Horace Trumbauer was the true heir of Richard Morris Hunt (even though we all admire McKim, Mead and White). His sense of grace, detailing, and most importantly scale and proportion were without peer. Kathrens captures all of this (and more) in this impressive book that has a special place in my library.

I cannot wait until his next book (more townhouses of New York City) arrives next year.
