I replaced the cartridge because of a small drip. An examination of the old unit revealed to me that the problem was a very tiny crack in the o ring on the base of the cartridge. I found that replacing that very inexpensive o ring also solved the problem.
The Amazon cartridge set costs less than fifteen bucks. Replacing it myself probably saved over 100. And no waiting for a plumber.
The actual leak point wasn't the cartridge but just below the handle stem (old term: stem packing) so it would only leak when the faucet was "on." Net result: Much smoother operation, no leaks at all.
Note: if you pull your original cartridge before ordering, it might not look like this one! This cartridge is used in many different American Standard faucets. Some handle designs use different systems for setting the on/off stops. In my case, the stop washers clipped into the cartridge are removed and discarded, as well as the black plastic handle bushing. Instead, there is a support collar in the handle that has the stops built in. Your design may vary!
American Standard sent me these - but I could not any longer wait for the package to arrive - the water would not turn off and to go out to the street to turn off my shower seemed to be a step too far.
So I ordered from Amazon and got the very same item and quickly. Problem solved. American Std sent them at no cost to me - but convenience was worth the price. Now I have a back up set in the event of another failure. Original life was almost 15 years.
Just remember before you install cartridge, you must flush out any lime that can cause cartridge to fail by pushing lime in and breaking the cartridge.

I guess it came keyed for hot side, as all I had to do to install was turn off water, unscrew old one, screw in this one, turn on water.Published 2 months ago by Jemez Fred
