This review is for the American Standard Champion 2004.014.021. 2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to reviews.
We are in the middle of a complete remodel of our home. So I'm replacing 3 toiletts and this was the first one I purchased. We started with this one because of the reviews on Consumer's Reports and a couple of other web sites. I've had a major problem with the 1.6 gpf toiletts ever since they have come on the market. I'm not a particulary huge guy, but I've got an uncanny...

This review is for the American Standard Champion 2004.014.021. I was a little reluctant to purchase such a heavy item through Amazon, however with the lowest price I could find and free shipping with Prime and no tax, I decided to take a chance. The unit arrived well packed and in perfect condition from CEVA approximately 5 business days after I ordered it. I was able to track the package on the CEVA website and CEVA called the day before delivery to confirm that I would be home to receive it.

Before I installed the unit I installed a new flange over the old one and also had to add a couple of flange extenders to bring the flange height slightly above the level of my floor. I unpacked the unit, installed the wax ring, and put a light coating of silicone on the bottom. My son helped me to lift the toilet over the closet bolts, we straightened and set the toilet and installed the nuts. The instructions were good except that I believe it is best to install the plastic washer, then a metal washer, and then the nut. The instructions called for putting the nut over the plastic washer which didn't seem right to me. We connected the water line, opened the valve and gave it the first test. Everything worked well right out of the box. This unit has exceptional flushing power and uses very little water. This is a well engineered toilet. We are planning to replace 3 other units with this model in the near future.

This is an attractive-enough one-piece toilet in a white that is so off-white that it appeared beige in the box. The chrome handle sits on the front of the tank instead of the side. Those are the negatives. I bought it because it is an American Standard -- there will always be replacement parts available -- and the specs suggest that it will operate clog-free. We installed it just today. Amazon.com, with free shipping, offered the best price anywhere even though Home Depot supplied the product. Shipping by CEVA was unsatisfactory. The toilet traveled by truck from Baton Rouge to New Orleans to Dallas to Philadelphia to Washington, then sat in a warehouse for four or five days because Amazon.com had not passed my phone number to CEVA and CEVA apparently did not ask for it. It was eventually delivered at the tail-end of CEVA's four-hour window on a Monday. No weekend deliveries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product for the money, September 18, 2010

We read several reviews of this product, including those in consumer reports. I also read some consumer reviews that were less than positive. However, we have had this toilet for almost a month now and it works great. We had numerous flush problems with two other brands in our other bathrooms. Even though this toilet does not seem like it has a powerful flush, we have not been able to plug it. I would highly advise anyone looking for a trouble free toilet to purchase this product.

I can't believe I'm spending part of my morning reviewing a toilet, but here goes....

I had two first generation water saving toilets in my home. I actually wore out a couple of plungers over the last 10 years. It was frequently a double flush or flush-plunge-flush. I finally had enough and spent the money to buy this based on recommendations. I have had this for several months and it works flawlessly. I have not had to use the plunger once. Everything flushes on the first flush, every time. It worked so well I even replaced our other toilet with one of these. Highly recommended!

I'm not a particulary huge guy, but I've got an uncanny ability plug them up without a problem. Not somethin you would normally be proud of or boastful about. Unfortunately, I can even do this without using paper (needing to use multiple flushes). In spite of its reputation and reviews, it plugged on my first try. So this one will wind up getting moved to a less utilized bathroom and I'm once again looking again for the holy grail of Thomas Crapper's grand invention.

Had mine almost a year. The best low flow I have used, and as good as most high flows. Only required reflusing twice that anyone has mentioned. Never clogged to the point of needing a plunger. Installed easily by myself, and I am sure no handyman. Ordered from Amazon. Showed up early, and in perfect condition. The one piece is a must as far as I am concerned. Two pieces just give you more places to leak; and a target spot to get dirty, that is nearly impossible to clean. Money is the only negative I can think of.

2.0 out of 5 stars Product Defect but great Return Service, May 1, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased the American Standard Toilet because it was like the one that CR rated as tops. Unfortunately, the item shipped to me had a defect. The gasket out of the tank would not seal because there was a defect in the toilet itself. The good news is that Amazon handled the return and subsequent cancellation of the replacement in an outstanding manner. I received a complete refund and am a satisfied Amazon customer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Adjustable water supply valve lasted four months, April 24, 2011
This review is from: American Standard 2004.014.020 Champion-4 Elongated One-Piece Toilet, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
We bought a Champion 4 in December 2010 and in four months we heard a constant sound of overflow. The foot-high black and gray supply valve in the toilet would not stop letting water into the tank. This is a common, cheaply made valve; similarly, the handle on the toilet seems to be made of flimsy metal or metal painted plastic. When flushing, make sure you press all the way down or the toilet doesn't work right. We're not sure if it is flushes completely as possible at times. I would have to say that the overall experience has been about two out of five, as we did expect more. The other toilet (another brand) in our other bathroom with the air pressure flush - not sure if they make them any more - has actually been the better of the two toilets. That's my experience; yours may be different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to clean even with hard water, January 6, 2011
This review is from: American Standard 2004.014.020 Champion-4 Elongated One-Piece Toilet, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
We have this exact toilet and love it. Seriously. The features are great. We have hard water and even rust. The Ever Clean surface has kept my toilet looking brand new since install! My other toilets in the house need high power cleaning every 4-5 days or they are all rust looking! The high performance flush is excellent too! 1.0 out of 5 stars Toilet not a problem. Amazon service on this - in the toilet., February 12, 2010
This review is from: American Standard 2004.014.020 Champion-4 Elongated One-Piece Toilet, White (Tools & Home Improvement)

Ordered a Champion toilet from Amazon. Had originally gone to HD and Lowes, and they had the toilet but the sku # was different from the one recommended in Consumer Reports. I wanted the one that had actually been reviewed; the model in those stores looked the same but I wanted to be sure.

My plumber installed the bowl but found a crack in the tank. Customer service wanted me to send the entire thing back, which makes no financial sense for either of us - why would you pay for both pieces when just the one has an issue? And when the bowl is 80% of the shipping rate?

But either way it didn't matter, because it was one week outside the 30 day return limit (which I though was 90 days, but I guess Hard Lines is different).

So, net takeaway -- don't buy large items from Amazon, stick to the local store. This was a lesson for me.

I'll be taking a break from Amazon for a while, I think.
