Here's another product I'd give 0 stars if they'd let me. A contractor installed 2 of these nightmares in our house. The finish on the one upstairs started to roughen after only a few months. We followed their instructions and never used scouring powder (usually Simple Green and occasionally Kaboom with a plastic scrub brush). Some of the worst roughening was in the shelf corners where we keep shampoo—the rough spots followed the shapes of the bottle bottoms!—really, soapy water is enough to destroy this finish? Gradually, the finish wore away where everybody stands to shower, and while I can't prove it, the bottom seems now to slope more steeply side to side toward the middle, and there seems to be a lengthwise crease down the center.

The tub in the basement bath was worse, especially considering it gets far less use: from day one the tub wouldn't empty because the drain wasn't at the bottom of the tub. The thing is perfectly level—I checked—so I can't blame the contractor. Anyone taking a shower has to sweep water from the center to the drain to get all the water out, which really isn't possible without a squeegee, and who'd want to take that trouble? After a few months we noticed a bit of rust color in the depression in the center (most of the bottom). Closer inspection revealed a fine network of cracks in the finish, with rust showing through.

I went online to see if I was alone and found that, not only are complaints legion, the company has shown a pattern of blaming installers, customers, and anyone else they can think of to deflect complaints—with that track record I didn't even bother to submit a claim. My only recourse is warn everyone I can and resolve to never buy another American Standard product again. (Don't even get me started on the 2 American Standard Champion toilets they installed at the same time!) Unfortunately, I'm out of work and can't afford to replace all this garbage, but I certainly would/will if/when I have the money!

The corner was actually dented upon arrival. This material was fairly easy to straighten out without any cracking or visible marks. Tub looks great and the integral drain is a terrific idea, easy install.

The Americast tubs are an excellent alternative to cast iron tubs. They provide a quality tub and retain heat well given the well insulated exterior coating. Unfortunately, American Standard offers a poor customer service should you tub prove defective. Having one of my tubs experiencing a problem due to defective insulation American Standard agreed to replace or pay for the tub, only to back out of the agreement without notification and then hiding behind some unknown middle manager to deny the payment. Of course the work involved in replacing a tub is far more costly than the price of a tub. Too bad a good idea is tainted by a lousy manufacture's promises. Buy this tub at your own risk. Four stars for the tub, One star for the company.
