Book Description

June 15, 2007
American Thinking is a collection of Frank Borelli's writings on a wide range of topics: the nature of being an American and the service-orientated nature of patriotism; the training necessary to so serve; the kinds of threats that we will need to address as patriots; the equipment (including mental equipment) we need; and a close look at the threat that will most define this generation: terrorism on our soil. If there's one theme that defines Frank's outlook and runs through this book, it is that terrorism will be the standard reality here in the U.S. in a very short time, and that we as a nation - each of us individually as citizens - will have to change to deal with it. And it's not a pretty picture. Life here will get more violent; the traditional social-work / liability-ruled approach to life - and to use-of-force in particular - will have to adapt; we will have to become genuine warriors. Short of this, we will become another Europe: appeasing, cowardly, statist, and basically controlled by any world-stage despot or philosophy. Frank is emerging as one of the leading writers on the consequences of this coming reality. He writes to the individual - not to the academicians, not to the social critics - but to you and me. His chapters in this book on the meaning of service, on facing up to the task at hand, and on training and preparation for it are critical reading. American Thinking will be one of the seminal publications that define what we are and what we do in this new world.

Review

From the Forward... This is a vitally important book, written by one of the great minds of our age. We are in the midst of what I have termed the Warrior Renaissance… an explosion of knowledge and understanding in a vital field of human endeavor. Indeed, in the last 50 years we have learned more about the physiology and psychology of combat, human aggression, fear, and the needs and responses of humans to stress and challenge, than in the previous 5,000 years put together. Bruce Siddle has termed this 'warrior science' and Tony Blauer calls it 'the Golden Age of warriors'; and Frank Borelli has been a leading trail blazer, contributor and chronicler in this Renaissance - this explosion of knowledge. Additionally, in the post-9/11 world, we are faced with a great challenge to our nation, our way of life, and our civilization. Now, more than ever, we must tap into the deep roots that have sustained us in the ages past. And once again, Frank Borelli has been one of the great modern warrior-philosophers and leaders who have tapped into our deep roots and strong old values to show us the way. You can think of this book as The Book of Virtues for warriors, and for any America citizen who is inspired to patriotism and service in the post-9/11 era. You hold in your hands a vital resource for all Americans who desire to sustain the values that made our nation great… and still can! As J.R.R. Tolkien put it, in The Lord of the Rings, Not all that is gold doth glitter, Not all those who wander are lost. The old that is strong does not whither, and the deep roots are not touched by the frost. Now, in this dark hour, let us tap the strength that is drawn from those deep roots that have endured the bitter frost; let us seek out the old that is strong and does not whither in order to answer the challenge of the age. And Frank Borelli, in this book, has shown us the way! So don't just read this book, study it, apply it, and pass it on to the next generation. For this shall the good man teach his son, that future generations may be sustained and inspired by the great legacy of our heritage. Dave Grossman Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army (ret.) 5.0 out of 5 stars A Warrior's Perspective, February 29, 2008
This review is from: American Thinking (Perfect Paperback)
American Thinking is a meat and potatoes treatise chock full of worthwhile, thought provoking observations.

Not only was I impressed by Frank's cogent words but I also had the honor of meeting him in person and the man is the real deal. Frank lives his personal convictions. His persona, hilarity, and mischievous repartee are an event in and of itself. In American Thinking, Frank discusses how our society abandons the chivalric code at great risk to itself as a nation. His book discusses the value of inculcating the next generation with the ability to make morally congruent decisions that link what we think, what we say, and more importantly what we do in our day to day lives. American citizens should be proud advocates for liberty and justice in a world that is sadly oft violent and chaotic. Read his book and pass it on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real keeper, July 13, 2011

This review is from: American Thinking (Kindle Edition)
Whenever a Law Enforcement Officer, Fire/Emergency Services Officer, or member of our military signs on and takes the oath of office, they, in effect write our society a blank check redeemable on demand for any amount up to and including their life. None should be carelessly spent and too many are collected in full. Every single one is collected at least in part. They do this for friends and family and all the rest of us whose only common ground lies in the relationship we share as Americans. It doesn't matter whether an officer works patrol or fire in a town of 500 people or leads the SWAT Team in a City of 5 million. It doesn't matter if they serve their military duty in a stateside mess hall peeling spuds or kicking down a compound door in Pakistan hunting for Bin Laden with the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group, the blank check is exactly the same.

I purchased this book after following the authors blog for some time. This book was everything I expected it to be. It provides a philosophical anchor point for those who have been willing to write the "Big Check" as well as enlightenment and education for those who perhaps haven't written the check, but feel deep down inside that being an American is something special that should be treasured and protected. It also provides some good information on how to process dynamic information in emergency situations. The section on Contextual Intuition alone is easily worth the price of this book.

The author's style is easy to understand and over the course of the book you will realize that he lives its pages in an uncompromising and unapologetic but in no way condescending fashion. I recommend this book for the check writers, and those who would like to understand their philosophy.

It's a real keeper.
