Book Description

January 1, 2000
Though Fr. Henle describes his book as simply a collection of his past philosophical publications that he deemed 'of some importance and some value' to which he has added some updating editorial comments, Dr. Ralph McInerny of Notre Dame, in his Foreword, places Fr. Henle and his works such as these essays high in the Catholic thomistic revival that followed Leo XIII's encyclical Aeterni Patris in 1879. For those who have known Fr. Henle and his work over the years, this book is valuable and convenient record and reminder; for those for whom this is an introduction, it provides new insight into a seminal mind.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is most gratifying to have some of his [Henley's] key articles made available in one volume. Henley's work presented here is relevant not only Thomistic scholarship, but also to analytic philosophy."

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome contribution to Catholic philosophy., April 4, 2000
This review is from: The American Thomistic Revival: In the Philosophical Papers of R.J. Henle, S.J. (Paperback)
The American Thomistic Revival In The Philosophical Papers of R. J. Henle, S.J. is a collection of Fr. Henle's essays on the Catholic Thomistic revival that followed Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Aeterni Patris, and his philosophical quests for ethical and human responses to the circumstances, challenges and events of modern times. Although Thomism went into a decline after Vatican II, it is now enjoying a modest revival, and the branch of "Aristotelian Thomism" represented by Fr. Henle's thought documents him as one of the leaders of that revival and offers welcome insights into Fr. Henle's thinking. The American Thomistic Revival is a welcome contribution to the study of Catholic philosophy in general and Aristotelian Thomism in particular.
