Sad to say I am the older generation now, so do not have mom and grandma to cook for me. I used to only get German food a couple times a year when we visited, but my kids have been bugging me to cook some of the old recipes, and I realized I didn't even have then written down. Then along comes this book, and I am now living my childhood past with my own children, one delicious recipe after another. Buy yourself a copy today.

As a kid, my mom would make us German food since we had relatives that came from that country. I always loved it, so I was really excited to get this book. I'm particularly looking forward to trying the Hot German Potato Salad and the Pretzles!

5.0 out of 5 stars A totally new culture for me October 17, 2012

I have, of course, eaten German food before at one of the great restaurants in the area, but it never occurred to me that I could make it myself. This author broke the recipes down into baby steps and now I think I can delve into a brand new cuisine with confidence. I plan to check out her other books now that I have this one under my belt. I heartily recommend it.

There is much to like about the American Traditions: German Dinners for the Holidays cookbook by author Stephanie D. Berg. I loved most of the recipes and my only wish was the author providing a warning about eating raw meat in her German Steak Tartare recipe. Raw ground round beef is used to make this appetizer. A food safety note should have been included with the recipe as the USDA does not recommend eating raw ground beef. In fact, the author probably should have suggested grinding the beef at home, if you plan to try this recipe.

Other recipes you will find in her cookbook include:

German Meatballs

Kassler Rippchen (One of my favorite German recipes)

Roasted Goose w/Apple Prune Stuffing

Potato Dumplings

Hot German Potato Salad

There is an interactive table of contents making navigation easy.

Recommend with caveats given.

Easy to follow recipes for authentic German food. Don't be afraid to try these. They are all easy to prepare. Who says simple meals have to be plain? And don't save them for the holidays. Yummy!
