3.0 out of 5 stars Competent retelling, June 14, 2000
By A Customer
Stoutenberg competently retells the familiar stories of Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Stormalong, Mike Fink, Davy Crockett, Johnny Applessed, John Henry, and Joe Magarac in a way that stresses the common tall tale elements and should be appealing to upper-elementary school readers. Useful in schools when balanced with some of the more recent and sprightlier stories featuring heroines.

3.0 out of 5 stars American Tall Tales, April 14, 2009

This may be a good book for Middle School students. I was looking for one for a 7 year old. I could not find one suitable for him. This was the closest one. It may need more stars if read by an older child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Stories, but not to many, November 3, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had to buy this book for a folklore class, along with about eight other books and this has good stories, though some of my other books have more detailed versions, it would be nice is this book has some more pictures it has a few black and white ones but nothing much.
